Sitges’ landscape of Azure Waters and Whitewashed Houses Makes it an Extremely Picturesque
Holiday Destination

Sitges’ landscape of azure waterschillibreeze writerMadhuchhanda Chatterji

Those who are bitten by the travel bug will agree with me that there are too many beautiful places to see and so little time. One life is not enough!
Going to Switzerland was my dream come true. I joined my husband, who was in Geneva on a UN assignment. Since he was working we could make only short trips on weekends, but we saw several places like Montreaux, Laussane, Engelberg and Mt. Titlis.

Around Barcelona

Luckily for us, there was a long weekend coming and we decided to make the most of it. One country I had always dreamt of visiting was Spain, so we decided to go to Barcelona. Traveling in Europe is quite cheap if one is clever enough to find out about the deals that are available on buses and trains. Friends warned us that Spain would be expensive so we went mentally prepared.

We took an over night train to Barcelona and checked into a hotel which was practically on the station and was well connected by bus, train and metro. Not only that, but we got a panoramic view of the city of Barcelona from our hotel room! Breakfast, which was included in the room rent, was another attraction!
On day one we took a bus ticket for the whole day, where we could hop on and hop off as we pleased, and see the places we wanted to. Since we were not interested in museums and art galleries, our guide suggested that we see Sitges, which is very close to Barcelona.

Colorful Sitges

So we took a train and headed for Sitges, which is on the coast about 35km south of Barcelona. We got down at a quaint little station and saw a number of narrow lanes going down hill towards the beach. There were two storied white washed houses on both sides of this cobbled street, lined with antique lamp posts at regular intervals. The houses looked so dazzlingly white against the azure sky that they seemed to have been freshly whitewashed. Most windows had pots of red and magenta geranium and they were all beautifully draped in charming lace curtains.

The beach, the sky and the water

The sight of the blue sky, white houses and bright flowers took my breath away. While walking down hill and inhaling the refreshing breeze, we suddenly got a glimpse of the sea through the rows of houses. It was fantastic to see the sky meet the sea in the distant horizon. I don’t think I have ever seen such a vast expanse of intense blue in my life before! Meandering down the cobbled lane we could see the white beach, beautiful restaurants dotting the stretch with tidy clusters of garden umbrellas adorning them. On the other side was a church, its whiteness contrasting against the blue sky. In fact this color contrast of azure blue and white was a predominant feature of the landscape that is spectacular.

Sitges is a charming little seaside town with lovely beaches, though they are a little rocky in places. There were people basking in the bleached sands, some playing beach ball, some swimming and some sun bathing beauties with sunglasses attracting a lot of attention! We sat at a restaurant, mesmerized by the surrounding beauty (Here I am referring more to the natural beauty around since the bathing beauties were out of sight!). We didn’t realize how time flew and we woke up from our charming reverie to catch the last train back to Barcelona. Sitges with its warmth and beauty continues to linger in my mind and I hope that I will be able to relive that dream again.
