A breathtaking sunrise view, hills, valleys, lakes, an interesting assortment of flora and fauna and above all, the magnificent expanse of the Atlantic as far as the human eye can see. If you are looking to be simply enchanted by nature’s beauty and its inherent variety, escape to Bar Harbor, Maine.

Bar Harbor’s key attraction is Acadia National Park. With more than 120 miles of marked trails and 17 mountains, Acadia is the second most popular National Park in the United States. The Park is naturally diverse with mountains, lakes and ponds. The Visitor’s center at the Park is a storehouse of information about numerous sites and activities that the Park has to offer. The Park Loop Road, which is 27 miles long, makes for an interesting tourist’s journey through an array of views and stops, some of which are Cadillac Mountain, Thunder Hole and the Sandy Beach.

Cadillac Mountain’s altitude gives you an impression of being so close to the clouds that it makes you would want to throw up your arms and reach out for them, like little children. If you perch yourself on top of the mountain, you would witness the moving shadows of the clouds above. The mountain’s rocky terrain would interest an avid trekker, but what makes Cadillac Mountain popular is its magnificent view of the Atlantic Ocean. If the timing is right, you can get to see different species of birds atop the mountain as well.

Thunder Hole and Sandy Beach create interest thanks to Maine’s costal location. Thunder Hole is where you can experience thunderous waves of the sea hitting against the rocks. There is a small cavity below the rocks where water rushes in during high tide. When the water rushes with considerable speed and pressure, air and water jut out with a thunderous roar. Hence the name Thunder Hole. Make sure you visit this spot during high tide. Sandy Beach is small but surrounded by rocks on two sides. It’s a clean place to hangout with family and friends. But get into the water only if you are resilient to low water temperatures.

Other attractions include Wild Gardens, which showcases a variety of wild ferns and Lake Jordan which provides for a serene and picturesque halt.

Bar Harbor is not only endowed with some of the most spectacular views in the Northeast, it is also a town that retains an old world charm. Cozy mom and pop stores line the town’s streets with exciting souvenirs and other merchandise. Most notable is the lovely jewellery made from ‘Tourmaline’, the state stone which comes in a variety of colors. There are also lots of local restaurants if you have a fondness for seafood. It is a pleasant escape from the routine retail chains, so obvious in most American cities.

Bar Harbor is a good place to visit during the summer, but equally enchanting during fall. In all, it is a perfect quiet weekend getaway where nature’s extravagance takes over to leave your mind relaxed and senses soothed.
