My wife does not read the articles in Harvard Business Review but she reads the case studies in Inc Magazine. The stories of how businesses succeed or fail capture her attention. (also read: Story Telling as Content). — Ralph Budelman
A case study is generally valued for its ability to introduce a close simulation of reality. It generates high levels of reasoning and makes concepts come to life. While law and medical schools have been using the technique for an extended period, the technique is being applied in a variety of instructional situations. In the fields of Law and Medicine, "cases" make up a large body of the student work. Even governments utilize case studies to determine whether particular social programs are efficient or if the goals of a particular program are being met.
Case studies have also found application in interactive language courses, courses designed to broaden the students' horizons, and even for technical and philosophical courses. Case study research is not a form of sampling or market research. The quintessential feature of case studies is that they strive towards building a holistic understanding of decision making systems, processes, implementation methods and the consequences of a decision or action. Case studies focus on one or two selective issues fundamental to understanding the situation being examined and are designed to bring out the details from the viewpoint of the participants by using multiple sources of data.
A case study provides an effective medium of communicating information regarding the micro and macro aspects of a given situation in a given business environment and the impact that these factors have on the industry, industry segment or organizations. Case studies can also be a simple collection of data on an industry, industry segment or organization which provides an idea of the past, present and future scenario for the industry or organization.
Schools of business have been most aggressive in the implementation of case based learning, or "active learning". Analysing case studies creates awareness among the students regarding the interrelatedness of the various disciplines of management. A case is generally utilised as a supplement to the theoretical courses taught to management students and as instructional material for executive development programs across the world. They provide an opportunity to analyse the situation from the point of view of the decision maker and provide ample debatable issues for the class. A successful case is one which provides an insight into alternative courses of action, rather than offering a single "correct" outcome or solution.
A business or management case is a careful study of a company or industry or industry segment that attempts to analyse events that occurred over the past or are currently occurring. The case presents a detailed overview of the background, process, outcomes, successes, failures and lessons learned in a real life or imaginary business situation. It includes either qualitative or quantitative data, or both, which provide an opportunity to explore the various facets of a business situation. It also provides information on any corrective measures that were taken by the organization to rectify the situation and, wherever possible, the outcomes and in doing so, it allows discussion on the pros and cons of the situation.
