Unlike its more famous counterpart that revolutionized connectivity to the world with a big bang, this WWW has brought about a silent revolution on our green planet. Its effect, though, is no less profound.
What was the creature with which Charles Darwin had a life long obsession? It’s the lowly, down to earth worms and more specifically the earthworms. How can these worms help in tackling the mounting garbage problem, the biodegradable kind that starts as a tiny drop from household kitchens and trickles down to become the mighty ocean gobbling up precious space at land fills in most cities around the world? It also tends to rot, produce a foul smell, pollute the vicinity and sometimes even pollute the under water aquifers, often irreversibly.
Well, the worm has an amazingly simple answer. It simply eats it all up and converts the garbage into rich organic manure for plants in a short span of time – an odorless, simple and natural process. Here comes the icing on the cake – the organic manure produced by the action of the worms on the garbage, in synergy with other micro and macro organisms, is no ordinary compost. It is vastly superior, containing the essential plant nutrients in the right proportions and in a form that can readily be absorbed by the plants. It is also teeming with millions of beneficial soil microbes and natural plant growth promoters. The end product, vermicompost, is simply BLACK GOLD to the organic farmer.
This is Mother Nature’s recycling at its best. What are its implications?
All kinds of biodegradable waste such as fruit and vegetable peels, tea and coffee waste, left over food, scraps of paper, leaf litter and other agri-horticultural waste can be tackled by the worms efficiently, preventing it from accumulating and polluting the environment. Being humus and nutrient rich, vermicompost is a wonderful, natural substitute for chemical fertilizer, be it for household potted plants or large scale farms. A greener and healthier environment? Absolutely!
Don’t despair! Cheer up and get ready! To do vermicomposting of biodegradable waste using red worms, Eisenia foetida! Either individually, using Home Vermicompost Systems or collectively, using Community Vermicompost Systems.
This is the message nature provides. So for those of us who can’t afford to ignore the serious challenge accumulating organic garbage poses to our environment, for the sake of our children and grand children, for those who wonder what they can do as individuals or collectively as residents in a locality, listen to this message and take action.
WHETHER YOU THINK YOU CAN OR YOU CAN’T, YOU ARE RIGHT. That’s what Henry Ford had said about the indomitable human spirit. Believe that you can make a difference.
