Northeast India Travel: Mayong in AssamNeed an editable PowerPoint map of North East India
The North Eastern region of India is mysterious, serene and largely untouched by outside influences. Blue mountains form the backdrop of the majestic Brahmaputra River and the clear blue sky serves as a canopy for the entire region. Despite being from Guwahati, I have always put off traveling to the seven northeastern states. Finally, fed up of fending off inquisitive questions from Indians from other states and also foreigners and sounding vague, I decided to put on my travel shoes and tour the region. Well, I wanted to follow the less trodden road instead of going to known tourist destinations. After much deliberation, I decided on Mayong, near Nogaon district of Assam, as my first stop. This place has always had the knack for firing my imagination due to numerous stories associated with my childhood. I remember being put to sleep by my grandmother with stories of practical and harmless black magic jokes played by the residents of this town on unsuspecting visitors. One version was that if you are not careful and show that you are not a believer of black magic, the residents will welcome you, serve tea and snacks and banter with you. But when the time comes for you to take your leave, you might very well find that the chair is stuck to your bottom. These and other similar stories were responsible for me choosing Mayong as my first stop twenty five years later. One sunny Sunday, I and a friend made our way to the banks of the Brahmaputra to board a cruise vessel from Guwahati that would take us to Mayong. After a sumptuous breakfast on board, we settled in for the breathtaking beauty of our surroundings as we lazily drifted along. Finally, we reached our destination and after disembarking from our ship, we boarded a buffalo cart and reached Mayong village. Rural and rustic, this was a real treat for a city dweller like me. At the village, we visited the Mayong Central Museum & Emporium and watched a fascinating Magic show. Finally, after feasting on local goodies for lunch, we went to Pabitora WildLife Sanctuary for an elephant safari to see the famous one horned rhino. This was, however, a bit of a let down. The elephant ride was great but, alas, we couldn’t spot the rhino. However, the charm of the surroundings and the welcoming attitude of the local people more than made up for it. Soon, it was time to return. We started back with the setting of the sun. The trip was fascinating. The river was tranquil on the surface and the view was spectacular. This was the perfect end to a perfect day. And though, I was looking forward to it, no one played any magic tricks on us. I guess it’s done on request!
