Outsourcing Medical Writing: Medical and
Scientific Manuscripts

In this article the writer writes on outsourcing medical writingchillibreeze writerDr. Saborni Paul

Medical writing, until recently was undertaken primarily by people directly concerned with their fields of specialization. A clinical researcher would write his own dissertation, a pharmaceutical company would present a write-up for its drug trial and a medical equipment company would prepare a manual to sell its product. These drug/equipment companies hired a writing team, which worked through the year. With the turn of the century this practice underwent an enormous change and a welcome one it was. The writing team was passé as the finished product could be purchased directly from content development companies specializing in the field. This eased the financial burden of maintaining a writing team and ensured good content quality at an affordable price.

Disadvantages of an in-house writing team

Hiring an exclusive writing team for the company was more of a disadvantage. The writers remained idle the greater part of the year since most of the writing took place towards the end of the study. This proved to be an expensive drain on company resources and the product was not always up to mark. The writing team lacked the skill to present the information in a logical, lucid and coherent manner. Moreover, the company writers tended to develop a bias towards the company’s product, which unwittingly crept into their writing. Thus, the idea of maintaining an exclusive writing team proved to be more of a burden than a boon to the company. As an effective answer to this pertinent problem came content development companies, which specialized in medical and scientific writing.

These companies had their own team of expert writers, mostly from medical and scientific backgrounds, who not only possessed in-depth knowledge of the subject, but were also skilled writers. These medical and scientific writing professionals had an extensive knowledge of the technology, discipline, terminology, and regulations and could be entrusted to execute the job with expertise and cost effectiveness. The client stood to gain from these expert freelance writers with their unbiased attitude towards the product unlike their hired team. Hence, outsourcing medical and scientific writing allowed for an affordable and tailor-made solution to be bought over the counter, enabling clients to simultaneously meet deadlines and ensure content quality.

The growth of medical and scientific writing

Medical and scientific writing is a fast developing discipline and such services are rapidly gaining momentum. India has a vast pool of qualified professionals who have contributed to it being a hot bed for such business. Indian professionals have thorough knowledge of clinical practices, drug development, and data analysis, in addition to good writing and language skills. English is the primary language of these professionals, which enables them to cater to an international clientele. The revenue aspect is attractive. It opens up a whole lot of employment possibilities in a country where employment is scarce. Good and affordable Internet connections have facilitated the ease of working from offshore locations. Thus, international clients are turning to India to tap its medical and scientific writing. India will be an power to reckon with where outsourcing medical and scientific manuscripts are concerned.
