Content Writing in India

Here the writer writes about content in India.chillibreeze writerPrerna Salla

It’s funny when Indian writers use the word ‘content’ in relation to writing. Most writers are not truly “content” in writing. When the internet boom gave birth to a flurry of writers, someone (un)wisely predicted that writers will initially benefit from the content explosion and then the boom will fizzle out. Of course, this has not been the case and web writers still hold on to their jobs; but the question is whether we are completely happy where we are.

There are several merits to writing for the web; more writing, meant more money and more confidence in churning out metaphors and analogies. The sad part is that most of the time all we really do, and few would admit this, was copy an existing web page, rehash the material and serve it on a colourful platter.

Going back in time, I remember vaguely when my father mocked me when I called myself a writer. His was a typical idea of us being ‘khadi-clad’ with a soulful look to our persona. My elders fueled the thought by saying that this was perhaps the easiest thing to do for any girl or boy for that matter who did not seek to acquire in-depth knowledge of any subject. Of course, perceptions have changed a great deal and content writing can now be a glamorous job. We can proudly call ourselves good writers, while we weave magic for websites, brochures, company profiles, the list is endless.

But, while wading through this hullabaloo, original content writing got lost somewhere. Somewhere beneath the green coloured notes of working and outsourcing our material to the world, we were cornered at simply editing matter or refurbishing content. Somewhere along the line, the words that flowed freely were corrupted by money. Writing might even be losing its charm. We no longer write content for the love of writing. We write because we have deadlines to meet, money to earn, in short multiplicity gave in to creativity. Yes, we are known as content writers, but are we truly content writers- pun intended?

So why am I not very unhappy? Because I still think there are lots of websites that promote only original content. Websites that can understand that a writer is a creative head! And more often than not a creative head has an independent streak.

My advice for website owners- If you hire a writer and you’re going to pressurize him or her to write in a particular style, then you are in for recycled content. Dealing with writers is like dealing with your own money. You spend it wisely and you get original content. You treat us like mechanical workers and what you get is content that only looks good thanks to your web designer. So if you want us to work diligently for you, make us feel special. For most writers, the pleasure of seeing their name in print beats all other incentives hands down. We do a lot of ghostwriting to earn a living. But getting credit for our content would inspire us so much. Help us become content writers in every sense of the word.

—About our writer:

Prerna says, "I am an eccentric writer with an innate passion for the pen. My interests are as varied as my mood swings, guess all Aquarians are the same. Always been a rebel with a cause, my interests besides writing are dancing, astrology and weight training. I prefer reading to watching television and can only read something as long as it interests me, which is what makes me read Osho "n" number of times. Love life and believe fiercely believe in whatever with the past has gone... the best is always yet to come!"
