Indian websites that cater exclusively for children are not as numerous or as quality conscious as they should be. The majority of Indian websites for kids are an extension of popular children’s magazines and television programs, containing stories, informative articles and program snippets. Most of these websites have been created keeping in view the concept of edutainment, and are largely successful in delivering content that is both educational and entertaining. Educational games are the most common elements among all the websites, being both interactive and safe avenues for engagement with content.

It is essential for parents to monitor their children’s internet activity and advisory websites such as the FBI’s parental guide to internet safety and ikeepsafe.org give good guidelines on how they can ensure safe browsing.

Here are Chillibreeze’s 10 best Indian websites for children:

Chandamama.com
Chandamama.com is the website of India’s favorite children’s magazine and one of the best Indian websites for children in terms of content and interactivity. It is a multilingual site, with content available in seven languages including English, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Sanskrit, Tamil and Telugu. The site has forums where registered users can post stories, jokes, riddles and poems that they have written as well as their own original artwork. Among the other interesting content available on the site are traditional and contemporary stories, quizzes, jokes and wallpapers. Also available is a comprehensive archive of stories and other content that has been published in the Chandamama magazine over the years.

Pitara.com
Pitara.com is the online avatar of the Pitara Kids Network. The website is divided into six major sections: Talespin, Magazine, Discover, Activities, Games and Reference. While Talespin and Magazine sections have fiction, poetry and other entertaining content, Discover and Reference deliver useful knowledge. The fun Activities section has a lot of suggestion for arts and crafts projects. The site also has a community section where children can create their own webpages.

Babloo.com
Babloo.com is an entertaining educational website targeted towards children from three to 12 years of age. The website is available in English, Hindi, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam. Besides written content, the website also has a lot of integrated audio content and graphics. The website is highly interactive and believes that knowledge can be fun.

Galligallisimsim.com
As the website of the Indian version of the venerable TV series, Sesame Street, Galligallisimsim.com has pedigree when it comes to the concept of edutainment. Much like the TV series, the site is aimed at young, preschool children. All of the series’ popular muppets are present on the website and each anchors different sections such as Curious Kids (mysteries and puzzles about a child’s environment), Health Wizards (health awareness, nutrition and safety) and Arty Artists (aimed at unleashing a child’s imagination), among others. The website is well-designed with attractive colors, highly interactive and characters from Galli Galli Sim Sim act as guides.

Balmitra.com
While not as interactive as the other sites on the list, Balmitra.com is a good internet resource for children to learn Indian languages. The Language Book section of the website teaches children the basics of Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil and English. Children can learn more about India and its rich heritage through facts and folk tales published on the site. The Activity Book section of the site has printable worksheets for children to learn languages.

Dimdima.com
Dimdima is the online presence of the children’s magazine of the same name published by the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
