March 2010: What's in the breeze |
| in India India has fascinated many people over the centuries. It is a country full of tradition, culture, history, wildlife, natural beauty and numerous other attractions. The most difficult part for a traveler is deciding where to visit, especially in a country like India, where you are spoilt for choice. There is a lot to do and see. Here are my top five destinations in India that I believe all travellers should have on their list.
1. Taj MahalSymbol of eternal love The Taj Mahal in Agra is one of the most famous and well-known attractions in India. The overwhelming beauty will numb you. It is sheer poetry in marble, a symbol of eternal love; the Taj has to be seen to actually understand all that you hear about it. Situated in Agra in the state of Uttar Pradesh, it is open to visitors throughout the year. 2. Bandhavgarh National ParkTiger Country Covering 448 sq. km in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh is Bandhavgarh National Park. The terrain and the density of tigers make it one of the best places to view this regal creature in its natural habitat. Numerous other animal species are also found in the sanctuary, a paradise for game watchers. The best time to visit is between February and June. 3. Lahaul SpitiTrekker’s Paradise For amazing unexplored rugged beauty this is the place to be. Lahaul and Spiti are two remote valleys in Himachal Pradesh, which lie between Tibet and Ladakh. There is little or no rain here making it is a trekker’s paradise with rugged terrain, perpetual sunshine and snow peaked mountains. Various Gompa’s and monasteries abound the valleys, showcasing the rich Buddhist culture. Most of this region in the North was closed to tourists in the past. You will find a lot of trails, valleys and lakes that are still unexplored. 4. KhajurahoErotica Built around 1050 AD under the patronage of the Chandela Kings of Central India, Khajuraho is a collection of twenty-two temples. The temples depict Erotica in one of the most artistic and unique forms ever found. Khajuraho is testament to the spiritual and intellectual mindset of the people of that era. The best season to visit is September to March. It is well connected by air to Delhi and Agra. 5. LakshwadeepUnexplored Treasure Scattered in the Arabian sea on the west coast of India is a group of coral islands called Lakshwadeep. It is a tropical paradise, undiscovered by most and is one of India’s best kept secrets. From swimming in the crystal clear lagoons to snorkeling in the coral areas, the islands have a lot to offer. If you want to be away from civilization on an isolated island with tons of sun and sand this is the place to be. There are a ton of other top travel destinations in India. It finally boils down to personal choice and preference. These are but a few of the many attractions that draw people to this fascinating country.
