The Changing Face of Travel Writing

The Changing Face of Travel Writingchillibreeze writerJoanna Budelman

There is an aggressive, adventurous, daring, flexible, explorer “out there” who is desperately searching and seeking to discover her next travel destination to the Last Frontiers! That “Final Frontier” destination will more than likely be in India, But how will she ever uncover and discover how to reach, where to stay, and what to do in this exotic and rarely visited destination?

It could just as well be young college students searching the bookstores or the Internet to uncover their next eco travel, adventure travel, or any of the varied specialized travel destinations that are waiting to be discovered. These exotic travel spots can’t be found because no one has bothered to document how to reach them.

The Problem

The vast resources of travel book guides like, Lonely Planet, Barefoot guides, Fromers, can not keep up the latest travel demands and fast paced researching, writing, and publishing that is demanded of an emerging and growing travel destination such as India.

The India of only a few years ago was most frequented by the hippie traveler from Europe, America and Japan while India’s neighbors Sri Lanka and Nepal have been over run with tourists for over twenty-five years. Indians didn’t travel much as tourists themselves, within their native country, until recently. The good news for India (bad news for those wanting undiscovered places) is that this scenario is quickly changing. During the past five years India has seen a dramatic change in who visits and who travels India.

Why the Change

Turn to the year 2000 and you will see the beginning of “India’s Decade”. This is the decade of India booming and growing economically like never before. The expansion of competing with global markets has brought about global changes to the world’s largest democracy. One result of these changes has been seen in the growing consumer class who is earning and learning through global exposure. What might one of these global exposures be?… the quest to travel! Today India is filled with advertisements, conventions, trade shows and books all targeting the Indian traveler. The result is that the infrastructure has been improved to accommodate the traveling upper-middle and middle class traveler within India.

I can remember my accommodation choices while traveling India in 1990. Basically three choices were available: Five star hotels, small 20 or 30 room lodges that were nothing to write home about, and the ever so clean privately run guest houses. The last two choices usually cost $5.00 per night as compared to the international tariff of five star hotels.

Today a tourist can find good accommodation in any price range… even better; India abounds with a variety of accommodation experiences, from exotic boutique hotels, to authentic bed and breakfasts! Unfortunately, here again lies the problem… how will a traveler find out about these jewels?

There is great demand for current information on a country like India. And as more information goes out more demand is created. New places are emerging that the even hippies haven’t found yet! India has some of the most exotic cultural bastions. They remain extremely isolated and hard to reach for the traveler, yet possible to visit, if you know how.

A recent example of how travel writing opened the door to
new frontiers for our family.

We are an American family living in Bangalore, India. My husband wanted to take a trip to the remote parts of North East India. The trip was for pleasure and for exploring business opportunities. I knew that we would be in the city of Shillong for a few weeks and didn’t want to stay in a hotel with our five year old daughter. So I did a search on google for “bed and breakfast Shillong” and “guest house Shillong” and one of the results led to a website that did cultural tours, and one of the pages linked to an article in the New York Times, written by a travel writer who had stayed in a guest house and done some cultural tours in the tribal hills of North East India. Finding this travel article was a “Bingo”. It connected us to a Canadian who runs a bed and breakfast network in Shillong, India. Our family had the most delightful stay in our own little apartment located on the edge of one of India’s oldest golf courses.

This is one example of the kind of preliminary research Chillibreeze can offer as outsource travel writing services. We can do preliminary research and writing on:

  • Eco travel,
  • Adventure Travel,
  • Cooking Tours,
  • Culture tours,
  • Home Stay Tours,
  • Boutique Hotels of India (research on),
  • Bed and Breakfast Research,
  • Learning & Experiential Travel

In addition, Chillibreeze can have our writers visit any location in India and write first hand accounts and reviews from any locations including safari lodges, trekking camps, tribal villages, scuba diving sites, silk textile shopping areas, temple tours, beach resorts, coffee plantation home stays, bird watching lodges, fishing camps, health spas, ancient ruins, native handicraft locations and almost any other travel locations that you can think or imagine. India has it all and we can cover it for you. Outsource your travel writing to us.
