Blog for Your Own Good

Blog for your Own Goodchillibreeze writerNeelakantan

Are you an aspiring writer with a full time job that prevents you from writing? In fact, there is no such thing as an aspiring writer at all.

Shocked? Surprised? Curious?

Let’s see what it takes to be a writer. An idea? A way with words? Paper and pencil or keyboard and a net connection? What else? A Publisher. And if you have all that? Would you then be able to write? Then what prevents you from writing now, in 2009?

Because, a blog is exactly that – has been that since the turn of the century 2000 odd. It is a means for publishing your writing on the web. No editors. No phone calls to make as a freelancer. No anybody. Just you and your blog. Put up what you want to write about. The only way to take the aspiring tag out of "aspiring writer" is to stop aspiring and start writing. And it is as easy as assembling a cheese sandwich. Drag the cheese onto the bread, slide another slice of bread and that's it. Getting started on a blog is about the same.

Well, nobody will come to my blog you say. Right you are. But how many people do you know read the newspapers you write for? Except for the fact that they pay you? So, that's not an excuse for not blogging. Tons of people blog, you say? Sure. Tons of people write too. Tons of people play cricket. That's no excuse. You do what you got to do.

How to get people to read your blog? Now that's a different story.

Spread the word around. Mail your friends. Put it up on Orkut, Facebook. Comment on other peoples blogs – especially leave meaningful comments. If they don't allow comments, mail to them, interact with them. And, most importantly, keep at it. It takes time, but you build a community of readers who come to your blog to see what you have written and hopefully give you good feedback as well and help you improve at your craft. (No, clearly, you cannot make a livelihood out of a blog from day zero or day thirty – perish the thought.)

And while you are at the blog, try out other avenues for your writing, but what is happening in the meantime is that, you are building your resume. The blog is your resume. The next time you talk to someone about your writing, the blog link is right there for them to see what you were up to and how you sharpened your skill.

What else do you need? Time? Well, for someone who loves his craft, time is really the worst of all excuses. If you are really passionate about anything, you will find time for it. Try "stealing time". Wake up a half hour early each day or sleep a half hour later – whichever works for you. Cut those weekend siestas. Take a notepad and write a page each day. Just one page each day.

Because in no place on earth can you mine metal directly. There’s always a ton of ore to be taken for a few kilograms of metal. Unless you write regularly, you will never take out enough ore for metal.
