The curtain finally rose on March 15 and the drama was enacted. Some elements were purely Bollywood-like in substance and form, the others were the premeditated mischief of a small group of individuals holding the nation to ransom. Sadhu, according to the Oxford dictionary and also to my secular self, is a holy man. Did any of them - the ones associated with the ‘movement’ - actually live up even to the “H” of the word so central to their being? Nyas chairman, Paramhans, stooped to the level of the weakest man when he threatened to commit suicide.
I am compelled to say that I always used to be under the misconception of Sadhus being elevated souls, who wouldn’t care for the concerns of just a single community, irrespective of the numbers it had. For them the whole world is one single family. If Godhra is interpreted as only a natural and spontaneous reaction to the carnage, it shows the shallowness of those who are its proxy advocates. All the devout Hindus might be compelled to change their definitions after the happenings in Ayodhya post March 15th.
Lord Ram, for whom the battle is being fought, is the epitome of all goodness and harmony. Wouldn’t he be pained to see the barbarity that took place in his name? Hinduism as a religion has always unfailingly espoused the cause of toleration and harmony, the core of its philosophy. Then what went wrong? I really wonder what Lord Ram must be thinking all this while, when the Shilas bearing his name changed hands. An apprehensive scapegoat, Shatrughan, did the honors, but what is done with fear is seldom done with pure devotion and thus the purpose is not achieved. The point that I am trying to make is that the bullies, the VHP activists, gave bouts of insomnia to the government, by brandishing tridents and maces throughout the country, mobilizing tens and thousands of people whom they christened karsevaks only to end their epical saga in a whimper.
I now eat my words - the saga has not ended yet. A much anticipated, but still piquant situation has arisen now with respect to the safekeeping of the Shilas, the stones tainted with the blood of so many lives that have been lost since Scene One in 1992. Agreed that there can be differences between communities over a subject as sensitive and as involving as religion, but the kind of misplaced zeal that has been shown by the VHP has brought more embarrassment and humiliation both to the government and the nation than anything else. If one were to see the never-ending stream of tears and feel the anguish of the survivors of the Gujarat mayhem, one would find religion absolutely meaningless.
That which thrives on fear cannot be justified, that which fuels and provokes antagonism among the two most harmonious entities in a nation declared secular long ago is a slur on the name of humanity. What further aggravated the problem was the irresponsible statement of the RSS - “The safety of the Muslims lies in the will of the majority.” This is the most dangerous and unhealthy of all the remarks made by it. The VHP, now synonymous with mischief-makers, will raise some other controversy as is its wont to keep it going. Purely radical in character and as proved by its track record we cannot but hope that the organization will come up with something that suits all.
I personally plead with all the people to defeat the designs of not only the VHP, but also other such outfits that are a menace to the secular character of the country. We as people can undo the plans that thwart peace and hold the whole nation to ransom.
