Ever wondered what it would be like to face an interview for the first time?
Confidence and being calm is the main mantra in facing an interview and you’re sure to be at ease from thereon.
The word "interview" gets you nervous and makes you go weak in the knees. Many companies and classifieds today use the phrase "formal talk" in place of an interview. Even though the phrase says formal, it somehow portrays more of an informal meeting. This makes the candidate or the interviewee relax and prepare well beforehand.
The interviewer belongs to the HR department of his/her company. They are given the responsibility of employing individuals based on various criteria. The interviewer or the employer will always act in authority and will take the opportunity to test you in every possible way. After all, it is a job, a duty and a responsibility that will be handed over to you. Depending on the experience and skills required to employ individuals, the employer will test you for the concerned job opening.
Depending on the company and job opening, many a times, interviews are solely an alternative for a personality test. Industrial psychologists or a qualified counselor usually conducts these. These tests study the capability of the individual on various factors like level of motivation, interest, positive outlook and reliability. Once the candidate clears this test, he/she is then sent to the HR department for screening for the job opening.
The employer is mainly looking for the 3 C's in an employee- Credibility, Confidence and Capability. You will be tested on various skills and usually asked questions that will give an insight into your personality and attitude. The employer will brief you on the company, its strength, achievements and goals.
Your personality, enthusiasm, communication skills, interpersonal skills and confidence are the keys to impressing your employer.
The famous saying, “the first impression is the last impression “holds true even for an employer-candidate acquaintance. It works both ways - the impression you create will have an effect on the questions asked and your likeability factor. Likewise the impression you have of him/her will affect the interview process, your understanding of the company and work atmosphere.
Do a bit of pre-research on the company, its employees, its work and especially the job opening that you have applied for. You should have a thorough understanding of the requirements of the position. Your research will help you communicate your interests for the job and your background to the employer and will facilitate a successful interview.
Tips at a glance-
-Make sure that you get there a little earlier than the scheduled time.
-Dress appropriately and look confident. Your appearance will leave a lasting impression on the employer.
-During the interview do not look nervous. Keep a check on your non-verbal behavior too. Give thoughtful answers to all the questions that the interviewer asks you. Speak clearly and be professional in your speech. Your answers must be precise and to the point.
-You will usually be asked to talk a little about yourself, your background and work experience. Be concise and use examples if needed. A little touch of humor does help.
-The goal is to show the employer your interest in the job and their company and that your skills and enthusiasm can help the company.
Towards the end of the interview the employer will ask you if you have any questions. Do not forego this opportunity. This will give the employer an impression of your interest in the job. Ask your concerns but be careful not to ask too many questions. Interviews are always time limited.
Finally, and most importantly, remember the 3 C's, relax and stay calm through the interview process.
All the best!
