Introduction

India’s picture in the eyes of the world has transitioned over time from temples, colorful villagers, elephants and bullock carts to one of IT, outsourcing, call centers and talented English speaking professionals. India has entered the global age. The new portrait emerging now is that of high tech-hospitals, state-of-the art healthcare facilities, and highly competent doctors, surgeons and support staff treating people from all corners of the world.

India as a Medical Destination

Over the past few years India has been attracting “Medical Tourists” from countries like US, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. What makes this country an attractive medical destination is the fact that the health care industry here has undergone an amazing transformation. World class hospitals touting top of the line diagnostic and treatment facilities have come up in all major cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Calcutta, Chandigarh, and Chennai. The doctors and surgeons hold work experience from top academic institutions in the US and UK. To top it all, the cost is a fraction of what the individual would be paying in their own country for the same service.

Future Prospects for Medical Tourism in Mumbai

Mumbai has seen a rush of health care providers setting up super specialty hospitals with facilities like air ambulance and shopping plazas. Hospitals are seeking recognition from insurance companies abroad, so that the patients can avail health insurance, as they would in their own country. Hospitals are also focused on receiving accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI), USA, to ensure global standards in patient care, safety and quality of service.
