Here is an interesting article about a hypothetical outsourcing situation.
An Outsourcing Scenario
DAY 1David is a workaholic. David is also currently in love with somebody. It is a clash. It is six, Tuesday evening and he wishes to close his desk and drive home early. Somebody is waiting for him at home, anxiously. But before he checks out, he has to check the request template on the company website for any new client request logged in. He does not cross fingers, which is a smart exercise to relieve anxiety. For he is sure there will be none. The webpage shows four new mails. Three of which are content on their website. Blasé, he proceeds to read the fourth one. Here is what it looks like:
What does Jeff expect? Is David going to toil all night? No, he has to get back to his love tonight and also catch up on some missed sleep. He forwards the mail to an Indian. Who best than an efficient Indian to work on this kind of a project. To which he adds, “Please mail me the finished product before 9 AM, Eastern time. Thank you so much” David is also a speed enthusiast. He reaches home in record time. The beloved we forgot to mention earlier is HDTV (with Tivo). So much for couch canoodle. While David snores at night, (one can directly co-relate this to his workaholic personality), someone in India is laboring to get the job done. DAY 2Davis calls Jeff first thing from work. The Internet has its own dictionary of golden words. “Check mail.” Sometimes it feels like an ambush in a game of chess, but what an incredible rush it is to be cornered like that. When David checks mail today evening, there will be mails and there will be a Jeff mail. ”Thank you, the cheque is in the mail.” If David snores aloud, it is to ward all disturbances and sleep in peace. He almost single-handedly runs a secondary research office from an upmarket New York street. He does not have to set up a state-of-the-art office, snazzy cola and coffee machines or even a foosball table for the stressed out employees. He does not have to pace his room each time he has to discipline an employee. All this saves him a lot of mental harassment. Touche. All he has to do is explain a little, and the Indians give him what he wants.
David promises Jeff a concession each time he comes to David at the quoted price they initially worked the deal on. At the cost of what David makes from his métier involving India, it’s acknowledged as a virtuous gift in the ecumenical world. The Indians never complain. Not having to work in a much maligned “call-center” atmosphere, they vaunt the status of a research associate-slash-analyst in an international organization, dropping their bling-bling visiting cards like portent lottery tickets at fine dining restaurants for credit card companies to feast on. Work couldn’t have been better. They do not have to wear a noose at work, bow an imitation far east posture for lack of communicable language, but also they can mail, chat, interact with their cousins studying in Tennessee or friends trotting in Texas. And get work completed on time. Makes one think of the eight-handed deities from Indian mythology. Outsourcing Research and Writing to India Offshoring research and writing is a fairly new trend gaining momentum in India. Unlike the full- fledged BPO industry, it has yet to permeate the Indian socio-economic scenario in a big way. It will meet with some antecedent reluctance but with India’s majority of English literate populace and close to two-and-a-half million graduates every year the employable pool is vast. Talent abounds and can be utilized using the right measurements. Writing of a technical nature, website content writing, journalistic writing, proofreading or manuscript editing, almost any kind of writing can be fluidly outsourced to India. English in India As identified in a previous eponymous article also available on our website, English In India, we have talked about how the Indian community has adapted the language from the days of the British colonialism to now become the third largest English speaking nation in the world next only to US and UK. Since India has a plethora of languages across the vernacular smorgasbord and most of which is not communicable between the regions, English has become the interlink through various sections of advocacy ranging from the primary school level to the media where the medium is widely encouraged to bridge the gap. Low Risk Outsourcing Outsourcing means greater productivity and more efficient goods and services. Outsourcing these services to India can be simple and entered into with no room for predicament. One of the best approaches is to assign sample work, accrue benefits from the finished product and then lead with more commissions on a timely basis. Maintain Conducive Procedure Firms that are providing research and analytics from centers in India are hiring people in New York, Chicago, and London to conduct client relations, develop new business, and ensure clear communications between Indian analysts and their clients. In order to assure quality it is critical to understand the process applied by the vendor before their services can be obtained. Most of them have a detailed document replete with queries and checklist to help regulate an easy workflow as required by the firm. Endorsement With the huge influx of American investors in the outsourcing industry the subtle differences in style and grammar are also gradually diminishing to null. British English is what is taught in schools but the influence of television, media and the arts has lead to a stronger awareness of variant styles across the globe. When at a time cockney “hinglish” is being spoken and the chutnification of English has lead to the Hindi language finding honorable mention in dictionaries worldwide, the Indians cannot be far behind in being able to seamlessly adapt to American English. While cultural subtleties can be a little tricky to comprehend in more creative writing endeavors, this too can be ironed through a proper channel of resource and guidance. And this ability to accept change has been one of the major capabilities of the Indian hand. What Can Be Outsourced to India
What to Expect from India? Global investment in offshore services will grow from $7 billion in 2003 to $17 billion by 2008 and India is among the select group of countries poised to gain from this spurt in outsourcing as per a new research study. Under profit pressures in a difficult economic climate, compelled by regulators to objectify their research, and facing the reduction or end of swapping research for commissions in soft-dollar deals with money managers, not to mention several multi-million dollar fines, investment banks and many Wall Street firms are finding India's lower price research options attractive. "Due to the persistent need for customers to reduce costs, coupled with the proven capabilities of offshore players, IDC sees considerable market opportunities for these players in the onshore markets, as well as local players looking to leverage offshore as part of their service delivery capabilities," Barry Mason, senior analyst for IDC's application outsourcing and offshore services research, said. The Indian education system composite with natural talent has produced not only a large number of technically skilled software professions but technical writers, scriptwriters, artist and many other professionals. In this part of East Asia, India singularly stands out as the most promising candidate to qualify for the position of research, creatives and writing indent for a global customer base. ConservationManoj Jain, CEO of Pipal Research, says the three-year old firm supports the research that banks do. Pipal has a team in its Chicago office that works with US clients and a knowledge center in New Delhi where the work gets done. Pipal provides general research for corporations and equity research for investment banks. Jain estimates firms save 50 to 60 percent by outsourcing their work to India. 'We do not offer buy-sell recommendations,' he says. Rather, the firm provides research that banks can put their own label on or use as the basis for a senior analyst's report. According to a CIO Magazine report the average yearly salaries for IT programmers in India is $5,880 when compared to what their American associate earn, US $63,331.They are waged lesser than Chinese, Canadians and Israelites too. The rationale of outsourcing can be gathered from this itself, by way of paying according to Indian salary standards yet having the benefit of similar productivity from a high earning American. One bank in New York, which outsourced some services to an Indian vendor, says it did not have to cut down people in New York. Instead having a headcount in India helped the ones in New York into more productivity as the Indian counterpart helped as an associate to the senior analyst. IndicationMore than 50 multinational companies such as General Electric have set up their research bases in India.Outsourcing contributed 29 percent to India's total software exports and posted revenue growth of 46 percent to 3.6 billion dollars in the fiscal year to March 2004, NASSCOM figures show. Revenues are forecast to grow about 40 percent in this financial year to 5.1 billion dollars. Kiran Karnik, president of the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), said the body had begun talks with IT firms, universities and governments about improving study courses to equip students for outsourcing and IT research jobs. This gives one more reason to outsource such jobs to India. The global community has acknowledged the importance of India’s talent pool and is currently focusing on honing it to provide for a better atmosphere of job options to the burgeoning class of developing citizens of this country.
