Spyware and How it Works
Remember ‘What Women Want’, the romantic-comedy from the year that was such a hit? Mel Gibson could surreptitiously hear a woman’s inner thoughts. Although a strange comparison, Spyware works somewhat like this. It is invasive and can ruin your surfing experience. When the marketer/advertiser needs to know what to sell, this is probably his biggest tool today. The basic gist is that they are snooping around your computer and looking at what interests you most. Spyware is a software that monitor your habits: what sites you visit, what you are buying, what you are choosing to watch. All this without your consent. So how does it work? Notice how pop-ups appear on your computer screen just when you are looking up urgent information? And when your Internet Explorer, without any command, directs you to just another website? Spyware are programs that attach themselves to your computer without your knowing. They will keep a watch on what websites you visit and how often, what bookings you make online, and what you shop for. Once the software learns that, it is easier for its operator, the advertiser in this case, to know what kinds of advertisements he can lure you with. Following this knowledge, marketers target your search in such a way that you get to see their ads. They keep reappearing and bothering you till you know something has gone wrong somewhere. Spyware is also a boon for people who have paid per page view or per click for the ad. With Spyware they can take you exactly to the advertisements they benefit from. Spyware’s activities can also involve retrieving information like your bank account and credit card details, your personal information and so on. Yes, this is scarier. Spyware are different from computer viruses in that they work in the background, do not self-replicate, and are usually there for commercial gains. They include pop-ups, trojans, worms, web bugs, monitoring software and more and don’t usually destroy your computer. Types of spyware include malware, adware and stealware. Their definitions we can save for another paper. How do they break through your infallible firewall? You can attract these mean machines by simply surfing the internet, while downloading extra-terrestrial applications or information, or on being misguided by their ploys. A lot of security devices are unable to detect these programs and this is probably why most of the computers today are raided by some Spyware or the other. So surf with caution and suspicion. Often when a vague message alert asking you to select ‘ok’ or ‘cancel’ pops up, it is actually attaching itself to your computer. It’s better to use the X on the top right corner to close the window. Other things that can save your computer are using a pop-up blocker, disabling the active-X on your browser and installing new software with great caution.
