Top Ten Restaurants in Ahmedabad
|
Ahmedabad doesn’t have pubs, and the locals cannot get alcohol legally. On weekends, the only modes of entertainment for an average middle class family are movies and dining out. Also, the people of Gujarat are foodies: all of them. Consequently, there are thousands of restaurants in Ahmedabad. If, for some inscrutable reason, you hurl a random brick, there is a very strong possibility of it hitting a waiter, a cook, or a restaurant owner.
I absolutely love food, and can say with pride that most of Ahmadabad restaurants serve decent food. But if you are in the city for just few days, make sure that you sample the delicacies doled out by the chefs at the ten best restaurants in Ahmedabad:
Gopi Dining Hall: In one word, Perfect; in two, absolutely marvelous. It’s so yummy I almost spouted platitudes like ‘essence of Gujarat’ and ‘the taste of Gujarat’. You will sit in a room filled with people who know their food: the waiters will keep bringing rotis, five different vegetables, and ten different types of sweets, rice and dal, and then some more. This place is ‘God’s gift to gastronomic juices’, and you can eat as much as you want. But beware of the waiters: they are the living embodiments of the Indian idea of hospitality. They will coax you to eat just a little more after you’ve eaten more than you should, and then they will persuade you to take one more bite. Desist.
Sankalp: Gujarati’s are not satisfied with Gujarati food item. So, we have restaurants serving food from all part of the country; the only problem is that you cannot get any authentic cuisine (all food items are laced with sugar: the way Gujarati people like it). Sankalp, since years, has been the number one south Indian restaurant in Gujarat, and it’s the only restaurant that serves authentic south Indian cuisine. You’ll love their two-feet-long dosas, and it’s an excellent choice for family outings.
Barbecue Nation: If you want authentic American, Asian or Mediterranean barbecued food, this is where you go. The restaurant offers both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, and there are coals right under your table, over which they’ll place barbecue rods to make sure that your food stays hot. It’s an eat-all-you-can style restaurant, and they usually serve delicious desserts after the meal. Barbecue Nation also has a pleasant ambience. The service is fantastic and they have live music most evenings.
Pepperazi: Easily the best restaurant serving Italian Cuisine in Ahmedabad when it comes to taste. It’s rather pricey (compared to other Ahmedabadi restaurants), the service is nothing special, and television is always tuned to Travel and Living. But once you start your dinner with the luscious cheese fondue, everything falls into place.
Delizio: Upturned coffee mugs hang from the wall, emitting shafts of soft white light; bottles and spoons adorn the walls. Delizio’s interior designed has created a modern but comfortable and inviting space. The service is superb, the ambience is extraordinary, and the food will leave you licking your fingers. If you are looking for a romantic dinner in Ahmedabad, you could do a lot worse than book a table for two at Delizio.
Upper Crust: Upper Crust has a number of branches, and their Vijay crossroads branch is where the best elements of all the Upper Crusts combine to give you the perfect dining experience. The main dining area downstairs is a little staid, but it is enlivened by animated chatter. You cannot get better sizzlers (or any other oven baked items) anywhere else in Ahmedabad, and the pastries are just right.
Agashiye: There are two kinds of foodies in Ahmedabad. Type one foodies concede that Agashiye tops the list when it comes to ambience, but they lambast its food, calling it overpriced and pretentious; the second type swears by Agashiye, and believes that it is the best restaurant in the city. But you can count on one thing: you will love the ambience of the Green House Café, and the royal service and spacious surroundings of the adjoining restaurant will make you feel special.
Freeze Land: If it’s good old junk food you are looking for, Freeze Land is the place to be: they serve the best sandwiches, hot dogs and pizzas in the city (avoid their ‘Chinese’ food). There are a number of colleges quite close to Freeze Land and so the restaurant is always filled with noisy, lively chatter of the college students. Eating here won’t burn a hole in your pocket, the food will fill up your tummy, and Freeze Land’s distinctive sandwiches will make your taste buds go crazy. On the downside, their service is rather appalling.
Patang Hotel: The glory days of this hotel are past, and the food is not what it used to be. But it’s built like a water tank supported by a thin, high tower. The whole hotel revolves slowly on a tall tower, bringing incredible panoramic views of the city to your notice. The service is excellent, and you can spend hours just looking at buzzing activity of the city.
Manekchowk: If you have a strong immune system, this is where you should dine. Located in the old city, Manekchowk is where you can find the tastiest junk food in Ahmedabad. The locals adore Manekchowk, and the place is brimming with people every evening. The waiters serve you with a smile, and you will find the best vegetarian food of Ahmadabad at Manekchowk. Not a place for people who are finicky about hygiene, but a paradise for the real foodies.
