An Overview of India's Ten Leading Software Companies

An overview of India's ten leading software companieschillibreeze writerSneha Bhat

India’s IT and software industry has remarkably evolved over the years into a powerful instrument propelling the nation’s economy. A NASSCOM-Deloitte study sheds light on the contribution of the IT industry to the country’s GDP: the IT/ITES industry contributes 5% to the national GDP as of 2008, rising from a mere 1.2% in 1998.

One of the factors motivating this IT growth is the export of software; it accounts for more than half of India’s total software revenue. Many multinational software firms are also drawn to India’s cheap skilled labor and superior technical competency and therefore have their offshore development centers in this country.

India boasts of several software companies; however, few noteworthy ones rule the roost. Following is a glimpse into the top 10 software firms in India.

Tata Consultancy Services - A subsidiary of the Tata Group in India, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is a service provider in the BPO and IT fields. TCS has development centers in more than 18 cities of India. Internationally, its centers span across Africa, Europe, Asia, USA, and Australia. Established in 1968, it has done some pioneering work in the field of IT and software. Distinguished companies like Adobe, Cisco, HP, IBM, Oracle, Siemens, Intel, and Microsoft feature in the impressive list of TCS’s alliances.

Wipro Limited - Wipro Limited is one of India’s leading service providers in relation to integrated business, technology, and process solutions. It is the first IT services company to use Six Sigma and also the world’s largest independent R&D services provider. With more than 95,000 employees hired across its 54 global delivery centers, this company ranks second in the Indian domestic IT services market. Wipro’s Indian and Middle Eastern IT business unit is one of the fastest developing companies in the Middle East.

Infosys - Infosys was created in 1981 with the aim of defining, designing, and delivering techno-based business solutions. Their services range from product re-engineering and systems integration to IT infrastructure and business consultation. In addition to other accolades, Infosys has been the sole Indian IT services company to be featured in the top 25 of InfoTech 100 (by Business Week).

HCL Technologies - A global IT services company headquartered in Noida, HCL Technologies provides services in custom applications, engineering and R&D, BPO and infrastructure management in addition to custom application and enterprise application. HCL Enterprises—HCL Technologies’ parent company—is a 32-year-old company with 60,000 professionals across 23 countries. As of 2009, HCL Technologies with its subsidiaries had generated revenues of US$ 2.3 billion.

Tech Mahindra - Tech Mahindra has been the leading IT solutions provider to the telecom industry for more than two decades now. Partly owned by Mahindra & Mahindra and British Telecommunications plc (BT), Tech Mahindra focuses on delivering effective solutions mainly to the communications industry. The year 2009 witnessed the acquisition of Satyam by Tech Mahindra, thus giving it a broader scope to satisfy maximum clients and consumers. This leadership-committed organization is known for its “Building Relationships around Opportunities and Projects” integrated program launched for its partners and customers.

Patni Computer Systems - Patni Computer Systems Ltd was set up in 1978 and has since acquired global presence in more than 15 countries including Japan, Germany, Canada, and Sweden. This company provides expertise in the fields of industry solutions, BPO services, application development, enterprise application, e-business, and re-engineering and maintenance. An ISO 9001:2000 certified company, Patni stands to be India’s 6th largest software firm providing IT services to its significant clientele.

i-flex Solutions - Born in 1989, iFlex Solutions offers a broad variety of custom solutions as well as consulting and application software-related services. This company serves more than 790 global customers and has its service centers in over 130 countries.

MphasiS - Mphasis is a service provider in areas of healthcare, media & entertainment, manufacturing, financial services & insurance, among others. Born out of a merger between MphasiS Corporation (USA) and BFL Software Ltd. (India) in 2000, Mphasis effectively supports G1000 companies in their business processes. Despite the company headquarters being in India, Mphasis has delivery centers around the world that boast of more than 34,000 professionals.

L&T Infotech - Larsen & Toubro Infotech offers global IT services and solutions across five continents with over 42,000 employees working out of these offices. Their parent company Larsen & Toubro Ltd. is a major leading conglomerate in India dealing with technology, engineering, manufacturing, and construction. L&T Infotech boasts of some leading clients including Sanyo, Hitachi, Chevron, and Bharat Petroleum. Its success is plainly visible in its over US$ 8.5 billion revenue in 2008–09.

IBM India - IBM’s subsidiary in India, IBM India, has carved a niche as one of the leading Indian IT firms.
