Amar Chitra Katha's Role in India's Heritage Preservation
The perception that story books are meant to enthrall children and cannot preserve heritage is certainly a false one. It is not an exaggeration to state that story books contribute to the preservation of our national heritage, especially when Amar Chitra Katha comes to mind. Amar Chitra Katha is synonymous with India’s heritage, bringing to mind the images of sages in deep meditation, warriors getting ready to uphold Dharma by sacrificing their lives if necessary, historical figures getting ready to fight for the nation and so on. The Late Anant Pai, popularly known as Uncle Pai, has indeed rendered a great service to Indian culture by introducing the series.
Right from its inception, children were treated to engrossing stories, such as those of the great epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata. Rama’s righteousness has been very clearly brought out before the children in pictorial illustrations that fostered more interest in children to keep reading. Even when the elders narrate the story to children, it’s possible that the impact would be much lesser, than when they read the story by themselves. Kids bristle with rage upon reading the story of Abhimanyu, who was killed upon entering the Chakravyuh. The same could be said of the impact while reading the story of Rani Padmini of Chittor. Amar Chitra Katha has also blurred geographical borders by including folk stories from all over the country. One comes across folk tales like the story of Sakshi Gopal, which can be enjoyed by all Indians, irrespective of geographical limitations. Similarly, the story of Tenali Rama can also be enjoyed by children from all over the country. Patriotism has also not been untouched by the Amar Chitra Katha series. The exploits of patriots like Subhash Chandra Bose, apart from being informative, also inspire young people to be patriotic. Children can get to know about the lives of saints such as Adi Shankaracharya, Madhwacharya and Ramanujacharya from this series. An important point to note here is that stories of great people can inspire people to find out more about them. After reading about a personality in an issue, there is every chance that a child would become curious to acquire greater knowledge about the person. Amar Chitra Katha titles on Indian mythology, folklore, history etc have contributed the effort in nurturing National pride, in a significant manner. Therefore, it can be concluded that the series has assisted in safeguarding Indian culture.
