5 Principles Followed by Great Business Leaders
During the last few weeks and months, we have been witnessing a literal tearing down of financial institutions and banks. On the religious front, nations are grappling with fundamentalists, and terrorism has become a global threat. There is widespread exploitation and domination because of a lack of good leadership. And on the national and organizational fronts, there seems to be a serious leadership crisis. The world is looking for leaders who can build, and not tear down; nurture, and not exploit; enhance, and not dominate. In the light of this longing for extraordinary leaders and the need to train, motivate, and develop the second generation of leaders, the following five simple principles would aid in promoting effective leadership. First, an effective leader is a person who has a mission statement. Organizations and nations are built on the vision and mission of leaders. And organizations and nations are thrown into severe crisis if leaders compromise on their mission and vision. Effective leaders stick to their mission. There is an old saying, “if you want to defeat them, distract them…” Distractions could be in the form of energy leaks, lack of focus, vices etc. There are a lot of things which a leader should say no to in order for him to be focused. Second, effective leaders have extraordinary relationships. People are the key to success in any organization. People can make or break. They could be assets if good relationships are maintained, and they can turn to be a liability if relationships are not good. A leader cannot retain people on his side if he is not good in his relationship skills. To inspire and motivate people to adhere to the leader’s aspiration and vision constitutes relationship of a high order. Third, effective leaders are extraordinary achievers. Effective leadership is bent towards performing, and it takes pride in achieving the difficult and seemingly impossible. Effective leadership can be judged by its results, and therefore the need to perform well. Fourth, the foundations of good leadership are laid at the ethical and personal level. Sound business and organizational ethics are basically an outcome of good personal ethics. A sinking boat cannot reach its goal and it cannot help the other boats on the sea. Fifth, an effective leader is one who contributes in a way that it impacts the lives of people around him. Since leaders are bestowed with power and authority, ordinary folks look up to them. These five principles of leadership, namely, effective leadership with a strong mission statement, extraordinary relationships, high performance, wonderful personality, and great contribution, would help any aspiring leader to be effective in his leadership.
