Brenda the Witch
“The stars look so pretty,” thought Brenda, thoroughly enjoying her ride back home. Suddenly, as she glided past the window of a house, Brenda heard someone crying! Curious, Brenda glided over to the window and hovered beside it on her broomstick. Peering inside, Brenda saw a little girl sitting on the bed, weeping. “She looks so sad,” thought Brenda sorrowfully.
The little girl was now murmuring to herself, and Brenda leaned closer into the window to listen. “I wish mommy and daddy had money to buy me a Halloween costume,” said the girl. “Oh, the poor dear,” thought Brenda in despair. Now, Brenda was certainly naughty, but she had a heart of gold, and she felt sorry for the girl. “There must be something I can do to help her,” she wondered. She wished Aunt Matilda were here. Her aunt was a very wise witch and had many powerful spells and chants. Poor Brenda was young, so she had only a few, simple powers. Brenda thought and thought. Then suddenly, the earnest witch smiled. An idea had struck her like lightning. “I know! I’ll zap up a costume for her!” she thought excitedly. But of course! Brenda knew the chants quite well, as she had used it time and again to play tricks on people. Brenda balanced herself on her broomstick and raised her tiny wand to the window. Then, pointing the wand towards the weeping girl, Brenda chanted, “Oh, magic wand, grant the girl’s wish for me, Dress her up as whatever she wants to be! A witch, a pumpkin or a fairy so nice, Conjure a costume for her in a trice!” As soon as Brenda finished her chant, her magic wand flashed and a brilliant light sparkled from it. And what do you know? In a trice, the little girl in the room found herself wearing a fairy costume! Surprised but thrilled, she danced around in glee. “It’s the prettiest one I’ve ever seen!” she exclaimed happily. So pleased was she that she flapped the wings at the back of her costume and waved her wand like a real fairy! Little did the girl know that Brenda the witch was outside, watching her with a twinkle in her eye! Brenda was overjoyed that she had made someone so happy. “I must do good deeds more often. It’s a nice feeling,” she thought with a smile. And with that, the clever and kind-hearted Brenda flew home, humming her favourite Halloween songs!
