Content Development Trends in India

Content Development Trends in Indiachillibreeze writerG Srinivas Roopi

Content development is a relatively new concept. People have started realising the value of content recently, especially after the arrival of the new media- the world wide web. Except for books and print media, writing has never been considered a career or profession. There was not much demand for content development either. A rare job advertisement in a newspaper was all that existed as a reminder of the field.

Content is the king

This situation has drastically changed in the new millennium. It was really heartening to see a prominent magazine carry a cover story with the headline ‘Content is the king’ a few years ago. Organisations are increasingly realising the importance of content. We still find chief executives of huge companies unaware of content as a product in itself. Though the world is changing, many companies still allot the job of content writing either to software engineers or web designers, who can make content appear, and design it in an appealing way, but not create content.

Experience in media or other forms of writing, is definitely a great help for content writers. But with a right kind of aptitude, some research and proper training, one can make a writing career a grand success. If your resume exhibits some technical skills like RoboHelp, FrameMakers, etc. (which are not very difficult to pick up), you are in high demand. Sometime back a Bangalore based American company offered Rs. 1,200,000 per annum for a writer with three years of industry experience.

The word is God

In the beginning was the word. And it will be there forever. The power of written word is enormous. It can even change the course of history. The purpose of communication nowadays is not just delivering the messages but to achieving the desired result. Each word written, in any form, is expected to turn into cash.

What about non-technical writing?

Technical writing in reality is not purely technical. It is writing about technical products for non-technical audience. All the technology that s involved in technical writing is a few software packages like RoboHelp and FrameMaker, which are required to arrange the content in an attractive and uniform layout. But some HR managers look this area as a technical skill. They are looking for technical graduates to fill these positions. Technical skills and creativity are two separate functions controlled by the left and right human brain hemispheres respectively and they seldom go together. The word ‘language’ means different things in the context of software technology and content. The former makes the latter appear to the audience. The former is vehicle while the latter, message.

Let wisdom prevail. Let us redefine WRITING.
