A Culinary Journey Around the World
Need an editable PowerPoint World Map While an animated movie like Ratatouille, enthralled the world with its culinary charm and a theme that suggested that there is a cook inside everyone; this delicacy known only to a few cuisine connoisseurs, found its place in the hearts of food lovers from all around the world. Rightly said, cooking is an art that is riveting and satisfying if performed right. It gives us a taste of various cultures unknown and sometimes undiscovered. Not only does it reveal the eating nuances of a region, but also shows us their way of life. How does it feel when you dig into a cultural mélange of mouth-watering cuisines from around the world? We bring you a buffet of alluring dishes from around the world, served hot and with a pinch of culture! “Como Mexico… no hay dos,” goes to say that Mexico is second to none. Jolly people, full of life! Indeed, Mexican food and music is simply exuberant. People love to sing, dance, eat and make merry. Mexico is where the national liquor, tequila, flows in abundance. Yet on weddings and fiestas they prefer rum with cola. Such is the diverse culture of Mexico. Three main ingredients, namely the hot pepper, baked beans and corn, head Mexico’s culinary assortment. The land of coveted pizzas and pastas, Italy has a loud exhibition of love and affection. Food plays a major role in its culture, to maintain relationships and affectionate ties. Guests welcomed in an Italian home are offered handsome servings of food along with wine. Italians enjoy food as much as they enjoy interaction. For them, the most significant meal of the day is in the afternoon, a meal had together with loved ones. While the north prefers more varieties of pastas, macaroni with tomato sauce is a favorite in the south of Italy. But eat bread with a serving of pasta and you will be frowned upon. They drink coffee mainly with a dessert and never with a main course. Coffee, that too, espresso is considered an integral part of the Italian culture. The land of exotic fragrances galore, Arabian nights and of course, the most gorgeous women. In Arabia, greeting is generally kissing two to three times on each cheek. Holding hands and playful touch on the arm, is seen as acceptable in similar sexes. Such is the culture of Islam, where food is generally had in a group. Savories and dishes are usually served in huge wooden plates called ‘Gassa’ and the entire family gathers around it. Predominantly being an Islamic territory, even tourists eating or drinking water, are scorned upon during the month of fasting called ‘Ramzaan.’ Eating pork is forbidden here. A few famous dishes include Bouishishe, Couscous, Shakhshoukha and Aish. Shawerma a specialty in Saudi Arabia, is often prepared on small kiosks. Dates and coffee, sugarless but spiced with a dash of cardamom is a staple here. Coming towards the land of the orient, China, which looks like a nation with unanimity, is interestingly an amalgamation of Mongolians, Tibetians, Kazakhs and Zhuangs. This is explanatory of the linguistic and cultural diversity in China. Rice is a staple, with wheat in the southern part of the country. Unlike other cultures, eating rice is considered ‘down market’ on a ceremonial occasion. Also unlike everywhere else, soup is served at the end of every meal. Their ‘yin and yang’ philosophy is also a part of cooking. Yin represents negative energy i.e. cold food, while yang is positive energy, when the food is served hot. It is essential to maintain the balance between both to avoid diseases. Yang, which includes, cabbage, chili pepper, curry, garlic and onion, if consumed excessively are believed to cause certain ailments. Wars, famines and natural disasters in China have also reflected in their culinary culture. They also eat bird’s feet and saliva, snakes, certain insects, fish eyeball and head, cat and dog meat; some of which are considered as a taboo in other cultures. Yet the world drinks their tea, an origin of China. The Han race drinks it black, Tibetans with Yak butter, while the Mongolians relish it with milk. People in Thailand are not exhibitionists of feelings or emotions in public. They fold their hands when greeting a person. Eating rice is a staple in Thailand, so much so that every Thai delicacy will tend to include rice. Rice is also considered to be a female deity. Throwing away food is seen as unforgivable. People in Thailand are also known to drink alcohol made from rice. Thai food is a mixture of rice with gravy and fish, since fish is found in abundance in the Siamese waters. Dishes like Pad Thai, Khao Pad, Khao Tom; Khao meaning ‘rice,’ are popular throughout the country. Due to its uniqueness, Thai food is savored across the world. So many cultures and their diverse cuisines, sure leaves one hungry for more. Every region makes a mix and mash of dishes and adds a dash of culture to make the delicacy a finger licking one! In the end, this is what makes the cultural splendor distinctive and special in its own way. Nonetheless, it wouldn’t hurt to say a ‘bon appétit’ before a hearty and delicious cultural platter.
