Mixing Fun with Fitness at 30
A bunch of my female friends who are in the age group of late twenties and early thirties were sharing their experiences and opinions about physical fitness and exercise. The conversation became hilarious when they shared some of their most weird and funny experiences. For instance, one of them who loved skating said that she tried learning it when she was 30. In the first class, along with fifteen other 5 to 10 year old kids, she was asked to wear skates and start walking. In spite of trying very hard, she fell thrice but managed to remain unhurt. However, the kids were asked to maintain some distance from her. It became difficult for their trainer to continue the class because the kids were either hurt or were laughing uncontrollably. Let me leave the rest to your imagination. Apparently, all these ladies had some common experiences. At one point or the other, they had come across a situation where they realized that the dress they bought an year ago doesn’t fit them any more, or their husbands advised them to wear something loose or the sales girl directed them to the section meant for the size ‘L’ or ‘XL’. In the next instant, these ladies scheduled a routine to set the alarm in their clock to rise early, go for a morning jog, burn few calories and cut the extra pounds within next few weeks or months. Some of them joined a gym too. They strictly followed the routine for a week or two and after that the alarm did set off on time but they decided to ignore it. Did this experience ring a bell in your head? Am sure, it did. Anyways, this is not an unusual experience because we tend to discontinue any activity in which we loose interest after a certain time. So, why not do something that serves both the purposes – Fun and Fitness. And if you are thirty or over, my advice is, pursue any form of dance. It is one of the best physical exercises to do and doesn’t involve any weird experiences. Let me share with you some of the fitness and fun related details of my ‘west coast swing’ class. West Coast Swing is a Caribbean dance that involves swift moves. It is like an aerobic exercise that helps reduce stress and burn calories. The swings in this dance increase muscle tone and coordination. The dance firms arms, shoulders and enhances our posture. Also, this dance requires a partner. So, memorizing of steps to coordinate with your partner is a challenge to the brain. This helps build our mental health. Besides, any form of dance is said to help lower blood pressure, control heart rate and maintain body weight. Talking about the fun part. As I said, we have to dance with a partner from the opposite sex. So, if your partner is physically or mentally incompatible with your dance steps, one may like to call it a ‘disaster’, not a ‘dance’. At times, we get to hear the guys moaning in pain when their female dance partners stamp on their feet with her high heel shoes. But I call it the worst experience when you have to dance standing this close with a partner who forgot to use a perfume or a deodorant before coming to the class. Anyways, all these make the class more interesting because we are here to rock with the music and laugh with our friends while burning some calories. Swing to the music and Stay fit.
