Greenpeace in India
In India Greenpeace has been active since the year 2000. Following the mandate of the umbrella organization, they have come a long way – successfully campaigning for the problems of Bhopal gas tragedy, Hindustan Lever Limited’s mercury dumping in Kodaikanal, Periyar river pollution, hazards of Alang ship breaking yards, electronic waste, illegal experiments related to genetically engineered (GE) crops, receding population of Olive Ridley turtles in Orissa and the dangerous climate change. Greenpeace’s recent victories include the French Government’s recall on toxic ship Clemenceau, Wipro & HCL’s commitment for eco-friendly production, Central Information Commission’s verdict on Department of Biotechnology to make safety test data on GE trials public and mass recognition of their Ban the Bulb campaign for energy. Mr G. Ananthapadmanabhan heads the organization as its executive director who is elected by a board of directors consisting of a group of eminent people from society. There are four core departments by function – ‘Campaigns & Actions’, ‘Media & Communications’, ‘Public Outreach & Fundraising’ and ‘Finance & Administration’. Interestingly all of this work is handled by a minuscule staff of some 200 campaigners, leaders & fundraisers. Out of this almost 150 employees come from its fundraising department that works across 10 different local offices in the major metropolises of the country. After the initial five years of its dependency on Greenpeace International for funding it’s efforts, Greenpeace India has become a self sufficient organization now with the support of more than 70, 000 donors. This community is growing at a consistent rate of 20,000 supporters annually besides the volunteer & activist group. Changing the world and changing priorities Climate Change has been a topic of discussion and distress the world over. The recent findings of the IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change) report & the catastrophic outcomes of the world’s rapidly changing climate in the recent past have proven that the old debate of ‘Non-existence of Global Warming’ is over whereas the world intellect has started moving on into factoring an ‘impact mitigation’ mode. On careful analysis one can see all of the other environmental problems converging into the depth of the global problem. Sustainable agriculture, receding ground water levels & its contamination, depleting forests & oceans bio-resources and nuclear energy & veiled threats associated with radioactive waste directly or indirectly attribute to this matter only. Thus climate change at present is the main cause that Greenpeace is focusing upon with an investment of almost two third of its resources. As it’s obvious that the world is left with a survival window of just 100 months in the future ahead, Greenpeace is integrating this campaign along with all possible stakeholders & other tributary campaigns through its direct actions, mass appeals, political & corporate lobbying to find a sustainable solution. Their vision to turn this struggle into a people’s movement will definitely win their campaign objective considering government’s right policies & industry’s innovations being their milestones.
