Hong Kong Tourism: Things to See and Do
Need an editable PowerPoint map of China
The first thing that you’d normally hear when you say Hong Kong is that it is super touristy and very expensive. I would like to think otherwise. Yes, it does cater to the uber tourist, but at the same time, there are many things that a regular tourist can do in this wonderful city. There are shopping malls and alley markets, night markets, awesome nightlife, as well as many day activities. Let us start off with where you can stay. Most tourists make the mistake of taking accommodation in the central part of the city in Tsim Tsa Tsui or Central. These are two of the most expensive areas that you can stay in, where you have high-end hotels such as The Peninsula, The Hilton, The Holiday Inn, The Sheraton and so on. If you look at the areas that are surrounding this, you will find a lot more cheaper hotels. When I say cheap, I do not mean that these hotels are like hovels! I mean that they would be a lot cheaper even while they are decent. Areas like Sha Tin, Causeway Bay, Kowloon Tong etc. all have good hotels as well and you can save quite a bit of money. If you are the kind who loves shopping, you can get all the brand names under one roof here. There are high-end malls dedicated to designer names such as Armani, Dior, Chanel, Ermenegildo Zegna, Salvatore Ferragamo, Christian Louboutain, Jimmy Choo and many more. These can be found in Pacific Place and the Elements Mall in Central. At the same time, you have your street markets that sell everything imaginable under the sun from designer knockoffs to the weirdest toys and knick-knacks for your home. There is a Ladies Market known as Tung Choi Street that can be accessed by going on the subway. It is a great place to pick up women’s wear as well as inexpensive men’s wear. Temple Street Night Market is also another market where you can get anything you want. On the ends of the street, there are several food stalls as well as restaurants to rest your tired feet. If you want to have your fortune told the authentic Chinese way, you just have to go the Yau Ma Tei, where you’ll find people who read your face, your hands, and a pack of cards! Another cheap option for shopping is the Stanley Market on Stanley Island. This is a great place to shop if you are looking for something special for someone back home. You can explore the old cobbled streets of this ancient fishing village and grab a bite to eat at the local restaurants. If you are the kind that loves to go on guided tours, there are plenty to choose from. You can take a harbor cruise by day or night with optional food. You can tour Victoria Harbor or you can choose to tour the outlying islands. Some of the tours that you can take to learn more about Hong Kong life are the Come Horseracing Tour, the Feng Shui Tour, Heritage Tour, Hong Kong Traditional Lifestyles Tour, Kowloon Behind the Scenes, Hong Kong Heritage Walk, and Kowloon Markets Walk. There are other tours by day that you can take like the Hong Kong Disneyland Tour, Hong Kong Island Tour, Hong Kong's Famed and Famous, Trail to the Hidden Oasis, Ocean Park Tour (Half Day/Full Day) The Land Between Tour (Half Day/Full Day), The Big Bus Tour and the Scenic High Flyer. If you like to party, all you have to do is go to either Lan Kwai Fong, Wan Chai or Soho that have roads lined with packed watering holes and nightclubs. There is never a dull moment when you are in Hong Kong.
