Five Things to Remember When Writing for Children

Magic mushrooms, talking bears, and chocolate mountains. Troubles? Well just wish them away with a fairy wand. Little surprise, that Neverland became a reality to many a fresh mind and Harry potter worked like a charm! Unlike adult fiction, stories for children are just that - stories. Wholesome, simple, and honest to goodness - like homemade soup. Tales that enthrall, make you smile, and even defy logic but who cares? Fflying carpets, enchanted gardens, boarding school woes, GI Joes, and aliens - they are all welcome! Finding your voice as a writer of children’s fiction is a delightful craft, as long as you approach it keeping five important things in mind.

  1. Turn back the clock: Definitely the simplest and most effective way to begin. Revisit your childhood and recall the smells and sights of books you loved and why you loved them. Colorful characters, the ticklish humor, the heroism. Think like a child and let the heart rule. Enid Blyton, one of world’s most celebrated authors had revealed that she thought like a child and wrote as one - how else would a chair sprout wings and delight readers all over the world!
  2. Age specific themes: It is important to relate to young readers bearing in mind their age. Very young kids enjoy stories of animals, nature, dolls and toy characters like Noddy. Whereas 5-8 year olds have a penchant for farm stories, fairytales, magic, and fantasy. Older children are drawn to adventures, friendship themes and mysteries like the Hardy Boys and Famous Five series. Introduce elements of surprise, happiness, intrigue, and love. Humor is one thing that always works with any age group. Authors like Wodehouse and Dahl have laughed their way to the bank by being funny!
  3. Style, tone, diction: Your style must correlate to the theme. Clarity is of utmost importance. Remember to keep your sentences short and sound genuine. Children are mostly happy beings by nature and light hearted stories will strike the right chord. Adopt the easy tone of a story teller and let the story flow freely, as you gradually stir in a twist in the tale, leaving the reader with a delicious feeling. Keep the language simple yet vivid, with an occasional enriching word. You may incorporate a moral but don’t sound preachy – kids catch on to that fast!
  4. Transform their world: kids get bored easily. You must have the knack to transport them to a make believe world where fantasy rules. Your words must have the power to bring alive every character - bring alive the sense of touch, sound, smell and sight. Children possess a sharper sense of curiosity and adventure than adults. Their ability to visualize is stronger and so you must be able to deliver completely. Even we, as adults love to escape to the make believe world and imaginary friends we made through childhood stories that impressed us.
  5. The purpose: The most important factor is to write with the intention to purely entertain the readers, and enjoy yourself thoroughly. Endorse a happy feeling and positive actions and be careful to avoid negative influences. Remember you are creating a joyful experience that someone will cherish warmly for a lifetime.
