A Getaway from the City - Karla and Bhaja Caves
Whether it just a weekend getaway you want or a planned outing, for those with a bend towards history, the 2nd Century B.C. caves of Karla and Bhaja are a delightful experience! Only 55 kms from Pune and can be reached by local trains, buses, and cars Karla has the largest Chaitya (worship hall) caves in India. As one climbs 365 steps along the mountain, the magnificent caves unfurl in a dramatic way. Known to have been designed by merchant Bhutpal from Vaijayanti, the main attraction is the 45x15m, Chaitya. The arched roof of the Chaitya has been supported by wooden pillars, which have astonishingly survived all these centuries. The Wooden Umbrella above the Chaitya is unique in the Buddhist caves around the world and is one of the finest in the world. It was in this hall that Budhisht monks from all over the world used to come and pray. Climb along the narrow staircases and discover the inscriptions on the walls, Karla caves has wonders hidden in its every corner. TIP: Always carry enough water. However if you run out of it there are plenty of Chhaas (butter-milk) and Nimbu-pani(lemon juice) stalls around the steps to quench your thirst. A small halt while climbing is also recommended not just to catch your breath but also to enjoy the surroundings. A 1.6 Km trek on Pune-Mumbai line is the site for Bhaja caves. Dating back to the 1st century B.C. of the 18 caves, the cave no. 12 is one of the finest attractions and is also the Chaitya hall. Supposedly made for Buddhist nuns there are 9 Viharas (dwelling place) as well. A few minutes' walk past the last cave, which also boasts some lovely sculptures, is a beautiful waterfall which, during the monsoon and shortly afterwards, has enough water for a good swim. Accommodation: The only place in Karla to stay and enjoy is the MTDC resort. With some 30 cottages, water sport facility and its greenery, spread over acres of land, the MTDC resort is a holidayer’s paradise! A boating trip on resorts’ very own backwaters and into the unspoiled sunset is a luxury you can enjoy away from the city. The resort will arrange for a transport to the Karla station and for sight seeing trips as well TIP: However if you are short of time, Karla and Bhaja caves can be clubbed together for a one-day trip as well. Also make advance bookings during rush seasons like Diwali or Christmas.
