Elevator Worries
My tryst with this lugubrious machine is a recurring affair on week days. During the morning rush hours when I reach near it at the nick of time, many times I have found the machine making a churlish upward movement, only to leave me scratching my head and puzzled by the consequences of a late reporting on duty. In daily life certain days are ominous in many ways. Such a typical day can begin with a slip and small fall in the toilet or forgetting something indispensable – like the mobile phone, the modern day necessity – or some important piece of information or documents that can upset the day's planning that was meticulously thought out the previous day. Missing the elevator in the office building at the crucial juncture is indeed one of such seemingly innocuous incidents, which can have unpleasant consequences. Machines are created by men to make their life comfortable and easy. And lo, quite often machines make life miserable than the other way around. This seldom means that machines are not doing their bit in making human life enjoyable. While I miss the elevator in the morning, my junior colleagues would have hopped into the unwieldy enclosure and pressed the close and move-up switches, leaving me and a few more latecomers sulking behind with eyes fixed on the watch dial or mobile phone. The self-righteous facial expressions and bemused looks cast down at those who missed it are like adding insult to injury. On the up-and-down journey the pranks played by the machine are aplenty. It is the morning rush hour and everyone wants to reach their destinations on time. Someone going up to the office floor like me wants the elevator to take me up while some others who just want to get out of the building want the machine to carry them down to the ground floor. And then the elevator gets the contradictory orders from different bosses to go in opposite directions. Yes, the first-come, first-serve policy is ingrained in the brain of this behemoth as well, and human beings' intentions often get converted into their frustration in the absence of the desired compliance from a supposedly obedient machine. This sort of frustration plays a part in rushing adrenaline and increasing stress levels. Though the elevator is at times a source of much consternation for grownups, children have a different view of this machine. My son, during his preschool days, would persist for a joyous ride in a elevator whenever he was in a building that has got these wondrous machines. As acknowledged by modern psychology, children view things differently; unlike grownups they are not much worried and deterred by consequences. This perhaps explains their mental poise and peaceful disposition. Yet, when the dust is settled on the maddening rush of the early hours, our friend, the elevator has a comparatively leisurely life. It is cheerful and dutiful at your service. The up or down journey in the elevator during the off-peak hours is a hassle-free and enjoyable experience. When all is said and done, wayward minds and their irrational behavior. Machines don't deserve the blame, rather people need to be more disciplined and methodical in their attitudes.
