The Mumbai train blasts brought tears to my eyes and nothing but blessings to my lips; tears for those who had lost a loved one, for those who had lost their lives for no fault of theirs, tears for those who had become so badly injured that their lives would never be the same again, never be normal again, tears for those who had not got the chance to say 'sorry' to a loved one or to patch up after a fight, or the chance to tell their loved ones that even if they had never expressed it, they did love them very much.

Tears too for those who did not get a single opportunity to prove their talent, for those from under whose feet the earth had been pulled away even before they could get on their feet; tears not only of sorrow and pain for those who had suffered, but tears for those who had perpetrated this without realizing how much destruction, pain, grief and sorrow they had brought into so many lives!

And paradoxical as it may sound, amidst this grief, I was so happy that my heart blessed all those people who putting aside their grief and troubles, were maintaining the streets of Mumbai, never letting it go out of breath for even a second!

The blasts witnessed the energy and spirit of Mumbaikars, an energy, power and force greater than the blasts themselves. Mutilated bodies were pulled out one after the other all night by those who had been spared the atrocity; age, sex, caste, and religion being no bar whatsoever. It was amazing to see how people stood together shoulder to shoulder in a time of crisis like this.

Every attempt was made to save lives that were trapped in the wreckage. Unnamed faces and unknown hands provided every passerby on every street with food and water—free of charge, but at the cost of their own safety and sleep. It was an exemplary display of how the human mind can overcome prejudices, resentments and personal animosity in the face of grave danger.

The Mr.Yadavs, Mr.D’Souzas, Mr.Patils, Mr.Singhs, Mr.Shahs, Mr.Khans and Mr.Iranis of Mumbai fused their energies to form a bond, a bond so strong that they saved innumerable lives. And despite the irreversible damage, the very next morning saw the lifeline of Mumbai—the local train—back on track, running as per schedule, indifferent to the assault on its sincerity.

News channels had a field day and the print media fumed for days together over the heartlessness of the attack. Reporters discovered and re-discovered newer angles to the story and the cameramen captured them “Live”. Journalists couldn’t stop writing about all the previous religious wars that have been waged in this country and if this was the beginning of yet another one.

Analysts kept revisiting the BSE blasts. Numerologists concocted theories on how it was the numbers that made it all go wrong. Astrologers blamed the pathetic stars of Mumbaikars. The government cried “Foul!!” and so did we.

Actors and actresses came out to voice their opinions on how we should dump brooding and get over the tragedy. Anti-terrorism clubs were formed and concerts were held to raise funds for those who had lost near and dear ones. NGOs and various support groups reached out to those who had been worst hit by the blasts and helped them recuperate not only physically but also mentally.

The families of those affected were reimbursed financially by the government when the Prime Minister, Governor and Chief Minister of Maharashtra personally visited each one of the victims in various hospitals, encouraging them to turn a blind eye to this misfortune and once again take up the challenge of life.

The scars of this hostile act shall nevertheless be a permanent part in the lives of those who lost a loved one or were personally injured. Each year, people get together to mourn for the unsuspecting victims. Thousands of candles are burnt every year, as Mumbaikars look back upon that tragic event and pray for the peace of the souls who left too early for their heavenly abode.

But from where I look at it, the entire purpose of the terrorists stood defeated. The effort and RDX spent on dividing the city and hurting the morale of the people was washed down. The city stood up to not only face the shameful act of terrorism valiantly and courageously but to reply in unison that “We shall not surrender.”

I ask today, ‘Where on earth can one find such unity in diversity, such huge billboards of humanity, such huge generators of care and help which refuse to get exhausted?’

I answer ‘MUMBAI! ONLY MUMBAI!’!

SALAAM MUMBAI!!
