Has the World Become a Safer Place After Osama's Death?
It remains a matter of much debate whether the elimination of Osama Bin Laden has made this world a safer place or not. Across countries, cultures and classes, the effects of Osama’s death are being put to scrutiny. According to some observers, the recent US operation against Osama is a symbolic victory against terrorism. The elimination of this man who had singlehandedly terrorized nations across the globe will considerably lessen the morale of the terrorists still active in many parts of the world. The killing of Osama might also give the United States a majority mandate to pull its troops out of the conflict zones like Afghanistan and Iraq. It must be mentioned here that the hunt for Osama bore fruit after a decade-long search and intelligence operation. In the end the victory did come, though late. For those who lost their kin in the 9/11 attacks, the killing of Osama has been a perfect way of witnessing the justice unfold. All this wait has finally been worth it. While there might be celebrations galore over Osama’s death, there are a few observers who hint at the dangers still looming large post Osama’s death. According to them, the world is yet to get rid of the scourge of terrorism and they have their own reasons for this argument. One of the reasons they cite is the growing angst in many countries against US policies. They say that the death of Osama has only fuelled this anger and a possible backlash by some extremist elements is the new threat that the world is beset with. Far from claiming the world is safe, these observers hint that it has become more dangerous than before. Even after Osama’s death, the danger of terrorism seems to be still a matter of much debate. So, will we be able to create a world of peace and brotherhood or is it be just a utopia handed over to us? Only time will tell.
