There is nothing more enticing to a child than being drawn into a world of adventure and excitement. In her mind’s eye, she becomes everything and everyone, and nothing, but nothing, is impossible.

In our treasure trove of children’s stories, Indian authors of children’s books write in the vernacular as well as in English. We have bilingual books, translations of English books into the regional languages and vice versa. Since these books are all set locally, it is easy for children to identify themselves with the characters and the locales. These books also succeed in breaking down all barriers of geography, language and local culture. Stories from Indian mythology such as the Panchatantra, Jataka Tales, Ramayana, and Mahabharata; folklore and stories with morals from all the States; and historical tales including Rani Laxmibai, Ashok-Birbal and Tenali Raman have never lost their timeless appeal.

A recent development is that these books are being published in a much more sophisticated manner, making them very attractive. Popular writers of children’s stories include Satyajit Ray (Feluda’s and Professor Shonku’s adventures), R.K.Narayan (Malgudi Days), Madhur Jaffrey (Tales, Myths and Legends) and Ruskin Bond. Illustrators like Mickey Patel, Pulak Biswas, Badri Narayan, and Ranjan De have enriched books with their beautiful illustrations.

The gaining popularity of children’s books by Indian authors is now recognized by Random House, Penguin, Harper Collins, Orient Longman, Frank Brothers, Ratna Sagar, Macmillan, Navneet, Neve, Rupa, Puffin, and Tara to name a few publishing houses. Pratham produces children’s books in English and 8 regional languages. Children’s Book Trust publishes a large number of titles. Comic books are becoming slick too, which is very heartening. Most books are affordable, and, as the awareness spreads, more and more of these books will feature in our school libraries alongside Harry Potter, Biggles, and Secret Seven. What is wonderful is that Sky Music has come out with Audio Books which use celebrity narrators like Naseeruddin Shah and Usha Uthup. Of course there is nothing better than thumbing through a good book and letting the mind soar, untrammeled.
