Sage Accpac: Revolutionizing the SMB Space

Here the writer writes about revolutionizing the SMB spacechillibreeze writerRohit Srivastava

‘Enterprise Resource Planning’ or ERP as it is commonly known has traditionally been seen as a ballgame of the big and mighty industry players. With investments being over 10 million Indian rupees for an enterprise wide implementation, ERP has always been an aspiration for the small and medium size industry segment

Although there are more than a 1000 different ERP solutions available in the market, the major ones to share more than 90% market share of the ERP space have been SAP, Oracle and BAAN. The entry level price for any of these ERP solutions would be anything over 5 million Indian rupees, customization expenses not included.

SAP is the undoubted market leader in this industry, offering an end to end solution that covers financial applications, human resources and logistics applications that encompass sales and distribution, materials management, warehousing, production planning, quality and general logistics. Beyond these, modules for CRM and plant maintenance have also been incorporated in the latest releases.

This is the ‘Rolls Royce’ of all ERP software, something that each ERP vendor benchmarks himself against, and every client aspires to implement.

However, owing to the upfront capital investment required, and also the tedious implementation cycle that is involved, ERP solutions like SAP fall beyond the means of the small and medium enterprise segment.

Sage Accpac series is an evolution from the earlier accounting software that had been developed by Sage. Branded as the ‘Tally of UK’, Sage has enhanced its basic software into an entry-level ERP offering, which can be implemented even with a small user base of five people.

Although the Accpac series does not have the functional width that is offered by other larger ERP solutions, it does have the fundamental modules that are required by any enterprise to take its first steps in ERP implementation.

Sage Accpac has 3 variants, based on the size of the implementation. ‘Accpac 100’ is for the small enterprise, ‘Accpac 200’ for the slightly larger businesses, and ‘Accpac 500’ for the mid market segment. The entry point price for a five-user license of Accpac 100 is around 15 thousand Indian rupees, lowering the initial capital cost of ownership, and minimizing first time usage risk.

Built around the core module of financial management, the software has been enhanced with modules to cover operations management, inventory, sales, and project / job costing using bill of materials. Additional modules have been developed by Sage-certified partners for both discreet and process manufacturing, which can be plugged in as an add-on. Sage has also developed its own CRM that seamlessly integrated with the Accpac series.

Both the ERP and CRM in their latest versions have been migrated to .Net framework 2, and support P/L SQL, MS SQL and Oracle databases. The customization is menu driven through the workflow framework provided in the software. The application is browser based, providing single point server administration, and can be accessed and administered remotely.

This provides a comprehensive solution to the needs of any small or medium enterprise. The first time user has a low risk, easy to use, and cost effective solution.
