Passing through the doors of the city’s newest and most complete spa, Quan at the JW Marriott in Mumbai, you are bound to feel languid on seeing how this underground sanctuary pays homage to water.

THE SPA

In Chinese, Quan means “the source of pure water” and also signifies energy, prosperity, wholeness and the foundation of all things good. Salus per aqua, meaning “health through water” in Latin, is the root from which the word “spa” is derived and the tenant at Quan. Water is the soul of Quan and its entire being in centered on it.

As I take the elevator from the lobby and head down, reaching Quan literally feels like descending into the earth to find the source of a spring. The major part of the reception floor feels like a river bed covered in glass. The water concept permeates the décor through the blue lighting, the waves on the walls and the underwater installation running along one side.

As soon as I enter, I am whisked into the café behind the reception. Sitting beside a wall with watermelons on display, I discuss my treatment while sipping chilled ginger tea. After settling on the Aroma Fusion Massage, I am escorted to the well of the spa where I am given fluffy slippers and asked to sit down. A spa questionnaire is handed to me and as I fill out my particulars along with my spa preferences (which will be handed to my therapist); I am filled with a sense of eagerness towards the rejuvenation that awaits me.

I feel unexpectedly relaxed even before the massage begins. Perhaps it was the spacious treatment room done in subtle shades of amber that calms and soothes. I learn that each room has an Ayurvedic symbol or bandha on the door. The seven bandhas represent key points in Ayurveda that start from the base of the spine, moving up to the crown of your head. The room with its stark interiors, hidden lighting, floating feathers painted on the ceiling and a large massage bed, was just perfect.

THE TREATMENT

My therapist lets me know that this will be a full body massage and she’ll focus on the areas with the most tension (my neck and shoulders) as per my questionnaire. As she lays her trained fingers on me, I feel euphoric. My muscles immediately relax, the pain stops, and it’s blissful... In the end 75 minutes isn’t enough time and I want more.

The Aroma Fusion Massage is an oil blended treatment using Himalayan floral extracts and Swedish massage techniques. It is a deeply relaxing and calming massage that is the ideal elixir for tired, stressed out city people. Pre or post treatment you can use the sauna and steam if desired.

Couples choosing a therapy together are pampered in an ultra luxurious suite with a standalone bath, pebbled floor, rain showers and twin massage beds.

TRUE BLISS

The extensive menu of services truly features something for every spa goer. From massages to facials, to healthy drinks and yoga, to personal training and fitness classes, Quan provides guests with experiences that continue to nourish them long after they have left the spa. Quan guests can unwind with pure pampering within luxurious rooms and relaxation areas. Tucked in the heart of the city, it is a place that offers outstanding personal service, and more.
