Finding the Spirit at the Office
Work does seem to have become worship in today’s achievement-oriented world. Everyone is geared towards achieving so-called professional growth in the robust corporate market. But in the midst of this, goes along lot of physical as well as emotional imbalance. In this scenario, the role of spiritual principles in dealing with work-life struggles is gaining tremendous interest. It would require a very fine balance to incorporate spiritual principles at work but the task is a lot simpler and fruitful. The essential essence of spirituality at the workplace is that it provides one an ability to look beyond the set patterns of mind. This might prove to be a boon, for creativity and innovation are two major forces that promise success for organizations today. The professionals and executives can be empowered if they learn the techniques to train the mind towards more productive conquests by increasing focus and concentration and preventing unnecessary traffic. An uncluttered and free mind is far more productive and creative than one filled with confusion, thoughts and doubts. Spirituality expands one’s perspective of looking at things providing scope for larger understanding of organizational processes and behavior of people. Spirituality has long been misunderstood as a path of renunciation and turning a back on worldly matters, which is a very escapist and narrow view of the human eventuality. A spiritually-oriented person can thrive very much in the world and rather even in a better way as he can appreciate the intricacies of life and is committed towards fulfilling his roles and duties. In a professional world, this ensures that he is able to stand on a balanced ground, not swaying unrealistically to either the successes or failures. The work-lives are filled with enormous pressures these days and a lot of money is spent on providing adequate training in stress-management and work-life balance. But following a new paradigm, where organizational culture is re-designed to combat the strains & stresses could be a novel solution. If we can imagine a day in a typical company starting and ending with short twenty minutes meditation or stress-relieving sessions. Human consciousness has grown to new levels striving to find composite balance between materialism and spirituality so that no dimension of life is neglected or renounced. One can be deeply rooted in spirituality and still spread the branches far away in the outer world without any apprehensions or conflicts. It is one of the spiritual principles that work done with awareness has a totally different quality to it. It not only culminates into valuable work output but also enriches the person who is engaged in it. This dimension needs to be highly pondered for a lot more people are questioning the meaning they derive from their work. This can also be a potential solution for those dealing with alienation and a sense of disconnection at work. A constructive change in the attitudes is needed to help many suffering with struggles in their professional lives. A spiritual inclination primarily ascertains that the person is geared towards self-understanding and thus, is aware of his interests, competencies, strengths & weaknesses. This ensures that he is likely to make choices that are more attuned to his capabilities. Through spiritual practice, one’s being is also nourished towards being more accepting, enduring, open to change & respectful of differences - which are qualities very much required in the professional world. Of course, this does not mean that such a person is a mere goody-goody who is spreading yogic vibes all the time. But he is an individual who is more grounded in the self and facing his work-life struggles more squarely. Mind has limited potential in facing pressures and stresses, which are increasing at an alarming level in the professional world. There is lot of competition and struggle at every step and the demand for success is equally high. Average aspirations and expectations of a common man from his professional life have also sky-rocketed. This also amounts to increased levels of frustration, stress & consequent ailments. So, the spiritual discipline need to be inculcated for it offers hope of building resilient and productive work-forces.
