Top Ten Ways to a Clean, Green and Guilt Free Life
Yes, we are the ones who cause these phenomena to build up slowly but steadily till the situation gets out of control. There are few ways we could delay, if not stop these effects and even reverse the catastrophes waiting to happen. 1. Be powerless – Not literally, but switch off the air conditioner, cooler, television, lights, and fans when not needed. Keep the windows open during the day to let in natural light and fresh air. Not only does it feel good, it also gives you a high about saving on your power bill.
2. Harvest water – Collected rainwater can be used for household needs. Rainwater harvesting allows you to replenish the water table in your area. Cities like New Delhi and Bangalore have to adhere to this rule for any new apartment that is constructed. Private owners should take up rainwater harvesting to their advantage. 3. Do away with plastic – Gone are the days when shopping would mean taking the shopping bag (often lovingly stitched by the wife or mother). This would be the norm for grocery shopping but now plastic bags are everywhere – be it a hairpin or vegetables, clothes or jewellery. Plastic takes ages to decompose, clogs the pipelines, and contaminates the soil. Carrying your own shopping bag helps reduce this environmental hazard. 4. Plant more trees – This helps keep the environment clean and green as more trees mean more life sustaining oxygen and the lovely shade on a hot summer day. There are many green drives happening around cities where volunteer groups plant saplings along roadsides and in public places to create more awareness and greenery. 5. Walk often – Do you really need to drive five minutes to go pick up your laundry? We need to start walking more often, doing our chores ourselves, and incorporating more exercise in our lives. Think of the ways in which you can avoid driving. Walk or bike the distance instead. Save on fuel and help breathe cleaner air. 6. Cut Down on Paper – Use email as much as possible. Save on paper by printing only what you must, printing double sided, and organizing your day planner online. Use washable cups and plates, rather than the disposable variety wherever possible. Opt for e-billing and pay your bills online. 7. Telecommute when possible – Many employers allow the option of working from home, especially when working from different time zones. This helps avoid heavy traffic and keeps the environment clean by reducing emission. Of course, working from home in pajamas is fun! 8. Go Vegan –Growing plants takes fewer resources than growing animals for food. This might be tough for those who love mutton and fowl. But if it’s possible, have vegetables and fruits more often. Limit the KFC outing to a once in a while affair, if you can’t resist. Enjoy the goodness of wholegrain, pulses, and the like. It’s better for your health and the conscience too. 9. Travel by road or rail whenever possible – A single flight across two reasonably spaced cities results in alteast 100 kgs of carbon dioxide (CO2) per person which we all know is not good for the environment. An example is a flight from Bangalore to Chennai may take less than an hour by air, but the resulting CO2 is huge. An overnight bus ride takes about 6 hours. While you sleep you are travelling and you reach your destination with daybreak. Isn’t that good and lighter on your pocket too? 10. Spread the awareness …and follow it yourself – There are many who never practice what they preach. We have many opportunities to walk the talk when it comes to keeping our environment clean. Our family, neighbors, friends, and especially children observe little things. Making a conscious effort to follow these simple yet effective pointers go a long way in instilling the habits we want others to have.
