The book entitled “The Excellent Trainer: Putting NLP to work”, is a commendable effort from Di Kamp as it serves as an eye opener for the practicing trainers, consultants and managers involved in the profession of training. It offers valuable insights on the changes in the contemporary business world and provides enriching inputs for improving the quality of the training programs through experiential activities. The author makes an attempt in integrating the Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques with the best practices in training programs. The book intends to offer a range of alternatives to the trainers for extracting effective results out of their training programs. The activities, materials and ideas suggested by the author in this book, revolve around the application of Neuro-Linguistic Programming in the training process for exploring newer dimensions in this field. In a way, this book may be regarded as a compendium of activities for the trainers, tailor made after a thorough understanding of the prevalent changes and studying the newer practices in the field of training. The book is broadly divided into five parts which progress sequentially, thus offering a wholesome learning experience to the readers. The first part of the book sets forth the context for an excellent trainer, by describing the changing trends in the organizational practices and emphasizes upon the need for a transformation in the training modalities for gaining a competitive edge in the global market place. The author very aptly expresses that the conventional methods of imparting training doesn’t hold good in the present scenario as the organizations are witnessing a paradigm shift in their workplace due to the developments in technology and globalization of economies. In this section, the author elegantly explains the reasons for the need of continuous acquisition of newer skills to the trainers so that they can make a meaningful contribution in their profession by being abreast of the contemporary processes. This section comprises of three chapters and each chapter has been effectively interlinked for capturing the interest of the readers. After describing the changes in the organizational world and the need for a change in the training pedagogy in the first two chapters, the author logically introduces the concept of Neuro-Linguistic Programming and its significance in a training program. He provides a vivid picture on the background of NLP and the pre requisites for introducing this technique in a training program. The second part of the book offers insights on the skills required by the trainers for achieving excellence in their programs and is subdivided into three chapters. In the first chapter, the author lucidly describes the changing role of a trainer as a facilitator in the complex business environment and identifies the imperatives required by the trainers for coping with such changes. The author highlights some crucial factors which govern the role of a trainer in the era of transition. The next chapter of this section deals with an assessment of the personal qualities required by the trainers which enables them to fit in their new roles. The author provides an account of how our personal beliefs and values affect our attitudes and behavior and hence they should be reviewed periodically to improve our understanding of self and of others since they have become an indispensable component of assessment in our jobs as well. The author refutes the age old belief that personal qualities are static which cannot change despite of several grooming efforts. Instead he maintains that through NLP one can raise the bar of effectiveness of personal qualities by using models of excellence. In chapter three of this section, the author elucidates the skills of an excellent trainer and how NLP techniques can enhance these skills for excellence. The trainer of the present century must be a facilitator who fosters a spirit of learning and development. Moreover, in the opinion of the author a trainer should be adept in analyzing a context in a wider perspective and be able to anticipate the outcomes of the facilitation process. Part three of this book describes the training process. The author covers specific NLP approaches which can be applied to the training processes for gaining optimum results out of it. This section equally comprise of three chapters, with each chapter offering an in depth coverage on these diverse processes. This section begins with the preparatory stage, during which the trainers are expected to be equipped with the requisite skills and abilities for successfully conducting a training program. The author suggests a roadmap for preparation by using NLP principles so that the trainers acquire flexibility in approach and become more learner-centric in their approach. The next chapter of this section offer insights on the key issues which the trainers must consider during the implementation stage of a training program. It provides basic guidelines to the trainers for practice in the actual training event so that effective results are extracted from the entire effort. The author shares some informative thoughts on the use of techniques by which a trainer can establish a rapport with the participants for fostering a relationship of trust and initiate the tone of the program. Moreover, information on guidelines for implementing training activities and the vital issues to be considered for offering a feedback and gaining the commitment of the participants has also been provided in this wonderful piece of work from the author. The last chapter of this section renders a guiding framework for successfully evaluating a training program for measurement of the training outcome. The author very meaningfully offers a categorization of the various forms of evaluations and their applications in different contexts. According to Di Kamp, a trainer can conduct an immediate evaluation during the period of the workshop for assessing the process by asking questions and feedback on what went well and soliciting information from the participants on the areas of improvement. Apart from an immediate evaluation, a trainer should also perform a follow-up evaluation by seeking feedback from the individual participants and from others and track the level of improvement in performance in objective and quantifiable terms. The author explores the ways of improving the effectiveness of evaluation in a training program. In part four, the author offers certain invaluable tips to the trainers for promoting their self development through efficient management of time and resources. This section is divided into two chapters under the headings of time management and methods of self development respectively. Di Kamp convincingly offers his opinion on the relevance of time management for a trainer in ensuring effectiveness in accomplishment of results. He suggests the approaches by way of which a trainer can set outcomes through a self analysis of the ideals and areas of interests. Moreover, the author equally offers practical strategies for time management and a few among them include: By taking models of excellence, customizing time management skills, by weighing different alternatives available at hand and preferring or opting those alternatives which are practically feasible to be achieved and subsequently match them with the preferences. In the opinion of Di Kamp, time management can be facilitated through experimentation of available solutions and identification of obstacles in self, in other people and in the entire system as a whole. In the first chapter of this section, the author suggests some wonderful strategies for increasing time for development by effective use of language and experience. The author suggests some useful tips for self motivation in this chapter by giving command to the unconscious, changing the focus, changing self perception and redefining avoidance for overcoming problems in the journey of accomplishment of excellence. In the last part of this chapter, Di Kamp suggests certain useful strategies for saving time as it is the most crucial resources out of the other available resources. In the last chapter of this section, the author recommends certain eye opening techniques for self development through an assessment of the objectives and potential benefits which a trainer may expect from such an initiative. In the words of Di Kamp, self development means apt use of every potential learning opportunity for accomplishment of superior standards. According to him, people opt for a specific area of self development by selecting the areas of gaps where some improvement is required through a combination of logical frame of mind and intuition. The author identifies a range of formal and informal methods of self development, which are quite relevant and meaningful from the point of view of practical application. The last section of this book is the most interesting part, as it comprise of experiential activities for the potential trainers of NLP which could be implemented in their programs. A trainer can implement these activities both in individual or a group set up in diverse contexts. Moreover, the author has very intelligently designed these activities, as it offers a scope for customization and flexibility in the program. Di Kamp illustrates around ten training activities based on NLP which are quite relevant and may serve as brilliant eye openers to the participants as they draw examples and facts from the practical problems in the life of an individual. By participating in these activities one would be able to facilitate self introspection and improve relationship with others for having a peaceful and a happy life. The activities included in this book, facilitate positive image about self, offer an opportunity for a review of our relationship with others, assist in setting targets for accomplishment of results and equally offer advices for using intuition successfully. The book is a tremendous value addition for the NLP practitioners as well as for the trainers, as it offers some innovative insights and techniques by way of which the trainers may increase the effectiveness of the training programs. The author makes an attempt in clarifying the myths and doubts of the trainers, by exemplifying thoughts and providing a practical appeal to the book through the use of examples and self introspection questions. The illustrations and tables provided in this book are very instructive and reader friendly, as they evoke enthusiasm and a spirit of can do attitude. Moreover, the author tries to express his thoughts by using simple yet inspirational language which maintains the interest of the readers.
