A Wake-Up Call to the Indian Youth

A wake-up call to the Indian youthchillibreeze writerVikas Shukla

When we think of India, the first few things that strike our mind are corruption, bribery, communal hatred and of course the thing that we are most familiar with-the scams. With every sunrise comes the news of mysterious murders in metro cities. Every new month welcomes a new scam, exposing the real face of our highly applauded politicos.

Even 50 years ago, our politicians were used to making the crowd-pulling punch line- 'The youth of India should come forward to eliminate the corruption, bribery and the other abuses of the system and lead the nation to the path of glory.’ Today, of course, the politicians have changed but the statement has retained its status quo. However, did we ever think of a basic question- ‘What the hell have yesterday’s youngsters been doing who have today attained the power?’

The most vibrant and energetic people of India seem probably to have lost their thinking power and have fallen victims to overwhelming politics. Since the Telangana issue has been raised, every other day we read or hear the news of a youth committing suicide for the separate statehood of Telangana. But, have we ever heard of a politician committing suicide for Telangana?

A few months back, when TRS president and leader of the Telangana movement went on a ‘Fast unto Death’ for the demand of Telangana state, why didn’t he refuse to be admitted to the hospital? Why didn’t he refuse to take all the essential nutrients through saline if he really was on a Fast unto Death? But his act initiated a spate of suicides by youth and resulted in the loss of thousands of crores of investment in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Why don’t we give these facts a thought? The politicians provoke them and the youth start committing suicide like mindless pigs! The whole of India would have committed suicide had this been the best option to overcome the hurdles.

Maharashtra is a state where a large number of poverty-stricken farmers commit suicide; however, the politicians in the state are always ready to attack the North Indian migrants. Why don’t they try to reduce the number of farmers' suicides that are compounding every year? Aren’t those farmers ‘Marathi Manoos’? Yes, they are! But the politicians have mainly eyed western Maharashtra and the Marathwada region, where 80% of the state’s population resides;by provoking and luring the people of these regions, they can earn a large number of votes in a short span of time. Then, who cares if the penurious farmers who are mainly confined to the Vidarbha region are dying every day?

When Amitabh Bacchhan announced the setting-up of a girls’
college in Uttar Pradesh, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena agitated against Mr. Bacchhan and inhibited the release of his films in Maharashtra, saying that he (Mr. Bachchan) has no love for Maharashtra. Then, instead of taking violent actions, why didn’t the MNS itself build a college in Maharashtra if it really loves the state? Perhaps, because establishing a college couldn’t have served the better purpose of enriching the vote bank and sky-rocketing the popularity all over the state as its alternative did?

As the historic Right To Education (RTE) act became fully operational, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh wrote to the Prime Minister that her government was short of money to implement the RTE act in the state and needed more funds to implement the scheme. Then, why didn’t the paucity of finances prevent the UP government from spending public funds worth hundreds of crores on constructing statues and memorials of Dalit icons? A special task force is also being raised to protect these monuments. Dalits are the most educationally disadvantaged in UP. If the state government really wants to empower the Dalits, why doesn’t it focus on providing quality education and employment instead of constructing monuments? How will these statues empower Dalits?

Why don’t we and when would we understand that we are just being used by the politicians for the cause of their own existence on the map of politics? If, on being misled by the politicians, we can throw stones and ruin public properties and attack innocent commoners, why can’t we rebel when the MPs and MLAs disappear from the constituency after being elected? Why can’t we raise our voice against the corrupt ministers who misuse the huge public funds? Why can’t we fight for the right purpose? Ask yourself.
