If you are traveling to India for the first time, it is wise to do some research and learn more about the country that you are about to see.

India is a potpourri of culture, learning, arts, myths, legends, temples, jasmine and beauty. Many pens have described all these beautiful aspects of India yet, for a first time visitor, India can be as bewildering as it is bewitching.

1. Do a thorough research of the places that you will be visiting in India. Check out the weather conditions during the time of your visit. Visiting India during the monsoon can put a damper on your travel because of the state of the roads and Summer is definitely not the time to travel. Best months to travel in India would be January, February, March, August & September.

2. One of the first things that you must remember about this country is to dress conservatively. Pack clothes that are comfortable and yet are not very revealing. Jeans and t-shirts are the standard clothes that most of the tourists prefer. You can also wear a scarf to protect yourself from the sun. Many female tourists also prefer to dress in the traditional cotton salwar kameeze which is very comfortable to travel around in and also inexpensive.

3. As far as possible avoid eating at open stalls and restaurants. Buy packaged drinking water wherever you go. Indian food is very spicy, so check whether a particular item is hot or sour before you taste it.

4. Many tourists are duped by the auto rickshaw drivers because they are not very sure about how much they should pay. If you are traveling by auto, ask the driver to turn on the meter. If you have friends in India, then you can also check with them about approximate fares.

5. While visiting temples or other places of worship, dress conservatively. You will be expected to remove your footwear before you go inside. In some places like Kerala people of other faith are not allowed inside the temple. If you wish to enter the temple you will have be dressed traditionally in saree and men will have to remove their upper garment.

6. Avoid traveling around the city after 10 PM unless you are a part of a group.

7. India is still a very conservative country despite all the western influence. Avoid kissing or hugging your partner in public. If you are being bothered by unsavory elements inform the police immediately.

8. In most of the tourist spots you will be hounded by hawkers selling artifacts but most of them are fake items. It is best purchase only at government approved shops.

9. It is always best to book your hotel in advance. Google the hotel name and check out the amenities that are available there. Sometimes photos can be misleading so it is best to have two reservations so that you can shift to the other if the first hotel happens to be a dump.

10. It is best to carry ATM cards if you are traveling in metropolitan cities such as Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad or Kolkata. There are many ATM outlets and it is very easy to withdraw money when you need it. If you are traveling outside the city ATM outlets will be very less so it is best to carry cash.
