All About International Schools

All About International Schoolschillibreeze writer Rachna Gupta

Years ago, while half of the world was asleep and the other half was going about their daily chores, an English rock band was busy composing and putting together phenomenal music that would take the world by storm. They wrote, composed, put the music together and then launched an album way back in 1979 called “Another brick in the wall” which shot them to fame. Listening to the song for the first time you can’t help but comment on the line “We don’t need no education”. Harassed by the educational system at that time, Pink Floyd used their music to try and change the way the system worked and to encourage freedom of thought. Children should be allowed to think “out of the box” was what they wanted to say through their song.

International Schools - The Lowdown
Luckily, times have changed and people have broadened their outlook when it comes to providing quality education to the children. The setting up of international schools in the latter half of the 19th century in countries like Turkey, Switzerland, and Japan, provided encouragement to other countries to try and implement the same. International schools are a boon for people who have to travel the world on business, especially staff of international organizations, missions, missionary programs, and foreign embassies. These schools help their children follow the same curriculum which makes the relocation process smoother.

As the name implies, international schools use the curricula that is based on the school’s country of origin. Most international schools today follow the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) or the IB Diploma (International Baccalaureate) Program, with the IGCSE curriculum being the most popular for 14 to 16 year olds. This curriculum is one that has been especially designed for international schools located all over the world. International schools teach subjects similar to the ones found in other schools but also provide extra curricular activities which help children develop skills in other fields too. Apart from the curriculum mentioned above, international schools today are also providing the IB (International Baccalaureate) Primary Years Program (PYP) as also the IPC (International Primary Curriculum).

Today the world has about 3063 schools offering the International Baccalaureate Curriculum. Since international schools have their own specific standards the faculty there is certified by the standards of the country of origin. The faculty is hired mostly from job fairs such as the one held by the CIS (Council of International schools). In this case schools interview and hire teachers at once. Today there are many agencies that also specialize in the recruitment process.

Change is inevitable but the process need not be painful and scarring, that is the main reason that international schools have come up all over the world. In fact, international schools have changed the way education was perceived earlier and that is the reason that local people too are interested in providing their children the same quality of education available abroad. With the world shrinking and job opportunities opening up in different countries, it is essential to create global citizens - children who are well versed in multiple languages and can adapt to any culture. Education is a lifelong and intelligent investment and the earlier you realize that the better equipped your child will be to take on the world!

—About our writer:

I am a Jack of all trades and a master of some! I have spent the last few years of my adult life decorating homes and teaching, but always holding on to my first love - writing. Today looking after my son takes up most of my time and in the little that I have left I like to write poems, stories and articles that are based on “need to know” and “good to know” facts.
