India makes for an attractive destination for backpackers from the world over, not only because of its diverse terrain and trails, but also because it offers cheap accommodation and transportation. Backpackers also throng to India to soak in its vibrant culture and spirit of adventure. The following is a list of the 10 most popular destinations in India for the inveterate backpacker/adventure lover:

Delhi

Delhi, the capital of the country is very popular among the national and international tourists. The most sought after tourist spots include the Qutab Minar, the new Akshardham Temple, Red Fort, Rashtrapati Bhawan, Raj Ghat, Humayun's Tomb, Shanti Vana, Purana Quila, and India Gate. Apart from these historically significant sites, Delhi also symbolizes modern India by means of its shopping malls and multiplex movie theaters.

Jaipur

Jaipur, situated in the north of the country is the land of deserts. The Great Fort, monkey palace, Hawa-hahal, Moti Doongari, Lakshmi Narayan Temple, and the Jantar mantar are some of the most frequently visited tourist spots in Jaipur. The Pink City, as it is called, is home to some of the India’s most precious gems.

Himalayas

The Himalayas which border China on the one side and Pakistan on the other are one of the most beautiful places in India. Tourist destinations include the two very popular hill stations namely Shimla and Darjeeling. Manali and Nainital have their own enchanting wonders while Amarnath is revered as holy destination for the Hindus.

Leh Ladakh

The beauty of Ladakh has allured travelers over ages. Filled with beautiful Buddhist monasteries, Ladakh has a charm which is equal to none. Monasteries include places of meditation for the religious Buddhist population. Some of these monasteries are century old which include Hemis, Likir, Phyang, Lamayuru, Alchi, Thiksay,, Shey, Spituk, and Sankar. Festivals in these monasteries are held every year in the summer and winter.

Pushkar

Neighboring Ajmer, Pushkar is a small holy town in Rajasthan. There are a lot of tourist attractions in Pushkar and a chain of temples exhibit Pushkar's spiritual appeal. Some of these are Rangnath TempleVarah Temple, Brahma Temple, Savitri Temple, and the Apteshwar Temple.

Mysore

The city of Mysore is situated in the south Indian state of Karnataka. The city had played host to royal guests and the resemblance of that royal touch is still preserved. The Maharaja's Palace and the Lalitha Mahal palace exhibits the city's royal nature. The Brindavan Garden, Rangana Tittu Bird Sanctuary, and The Jagan Mohana Palace are some of the places which merit a visit.

Agra

Situated in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Agra is a busy tourist location and has its share of historically significant structures. Taj Mahal is the primary attraction for tourists who visit Agra for the first time. Other important sites are Fatehpur Sikri, Itimad Ud Daulah, Rambagh Gardens, Dayalbagh Gardens, Chini ka Rauza, Akbar's Tomb, and Buland Darwaza.

Munnar

Munnar is a beautiful hill station in the state of Kerala. Full of scenic beauty Munnar offers a number of attractive spots for the backpackers to explore. Pothamedu , a place with great scenic beauty shows us the glimpse of the tea, coffee and cardamom plantations. Devikulam, a popular picnic spot in the area is a perfect place to relax as the cool mountain breeze enlivens one's senses. Mattupetty, offers boating service at the Mattupetty Dam and not to forget the Mattupetty Lake which is a popular picnic spot. Attukal and Nyayamakad have a rich array of hills and waterfalls which make them a trekker’s paradise.

Goa

Goa is perhaps the most popular tourist destination in India amongst the international tourists. It has the sandy sea beach, hotels which range from the expensive, sophisticated to the moderate ones. Some of the well known beaches are Colva Beach, Baga Beach, Vagator Beach, Candolim Beach and Anuja Beach. Beside the beaches, the city is home to some historically significant buildings like Church of St. Francis of Assisi, Basilica of Bom Jesus & St. Catherine's Church.

Hampi

Beautiful landscapes and mountainous surroundings make Hampi an amazing tourist attraction. Some of the places of interest include Ugra Narasimha, Anegondi, Badava Linga, Vittala temple, Anjeyanadri Hill, The Kings’ balance, Zenana enclosure, Tungabhadra River, Lotus temple, Virupapura, and Madhavan Palace.
