Best Companies to Work for in India
Every now and then, magazines, newspapers, and websites release lists of Indian companies that have earned themselves a reputation for being fantastic places to work at. Criteria like salary packages, management, vision, corporate culture, training opportunities and career and/ or growth prospects and even corporate image perception are just a few benchmarks used to derive at these lists. In the recent past, the IT sector in India has emerged rather strongly as a glamorous sector to work in but let us look at some of the other companies that can also qualify in our search for the best companies to work for in India. Considering the fact that the word ‘Google’ has replaced the word ‘search’ in normal language, it is not surprising that Google finds pride of place on every list of “dream companies” to work for! Employees are known as Googlers and newbies are known as Nooglers. This company seems to abhor any form of structure in its thought process and innovation is the main mantra everyone seems to live by. Imagine senior management of a company saying that failure is encouraged! The charm of the fluid structure mainly is that the allowance for failure has not led to complacency. On the list is the one company that reinforced India’s presence in the software sector – and that is Intel. Sure Infosys is still a mammoth and is very much a dream company but Intel also finds a lot of popularity for its CSR initiatives and its focus on fostering a supportive culture for women employees. Imagine being a chocoholic and working for Cadbury India! Well, personal taste aside, Cadbury India is actually on the list of best companies to work for in India. The famous line of making today delicious and their advertisements with a human angle also come together to put Cadbury in this list. From the hospitality industry, Marriott Hotels has made an entrance into the list for its emphasis on work – life balance and information management systems. Interestingly, there are no ‘employees’ in this group of hotels – only ‘associates’. A couple of Tata companies have also established their position on the list. This is not surprising at all. The Tata group manages to evoke a sense of patriotism and positive mindset in everybody. Therefore Titan Industries and Taj Hotels have made it to this list of best companies to work for. Titan qualifies thanks to its well-structured hiring systems and an equally strong structure for benefits. The Taj Hotels showed remarkable support for employees after the Mumbai terror strikes. What made this support even more notable was the fact that it was given with generosity and understated (read “not publicized”) simplicity. The Taj resilience saw the re- opening of the hotel in quick time. Imagine a corporate entity or employer that can inspire people to give up their lives for their customers – that’s the Taj spirit for sure. Speaking of old timers, Godrej Industries has also made its mark in the country and some of the attractive aspects of this company are due to its having reinvented itself and become rather contemporary in its work style and market reach strategy. The manufacturing industry is not stolid and fuddy- duddy anymore. Young people in India are looking at this sector for exciting jobs and careers too. Therefore, Forbes Marshall has made it to the list of best companies to work for. Forbes Marshall is characterized by great social responsibility and the key feature of this is extremely high employee participation. The company also pays close attention to nurturing employee trust and bonhomie in the corporate environment. With a brand ambassador like Abhishek Bachchan, Idea Cellular should hit all the right frequencies. It has also made it to the list of desirable companies in terms of work atmosphere. Besides the film actor rooting for it, the company has put together a corporate culture that is great fun to work in. Offering a professional work space has also helped the company gain popularity among more than 70 million subscribers. The telecom sector has always been pretty vibrant in terms of technology opportunities and career prospects. Bharti Airtel makes it to the list for physical office space. The company is also top of the mind in terms of customer recall for offering a wide range of products and very innovative packages for clients. According to a survey, Bharti Airtel also offers great opportunities for employees to grow and develop. While we may all love to hate the government organizations, it may be unfair to bestow the same opinion on NTPC. According to a newspaper the public sector company has been recognized as having best practices for Human Resource Management and has won the Gold trophy at SCOPE. NTPC or National Power Thermal Corporation also knits its employees into the weave and weft of social responsibility activities and promotes higher work ethics. Most of these companies have found place in the TrustIndex and CultureAudit. Several other companies from sectors like government, hospitality and even travel companies have made it to the list. Several other honorable mentions are NetApp, PayPal, American Express and Eureka Forbes.
