Tips to Boost Brain Power

Tips to Boost Brain Powerchillibreeze writerSmruthy Sachidanandan

We’ve all been there. Your colleagues are suddenly coming up with all the bright ideas while you’re frighteningly slow, you miss the most obvious solutions, and even your teenage brother seems abnormally smart these days. Your brain is stuck in a rut and creativity seems to have dried out. Welcome to adulthood!

It doesn’t matter if you were a super achiever, as a student. The day to day monotony of repetitive office life can dull even Einstein’s brain. On an average, we use only 10% of our brain capacity. If we’re stuck in mechanical jobs, that percentage depletes further. Scary, isn’t it? The good news is there are a few simple techniques to get out of it. Read on to find out.

Eat Pomegranate.
This ruby-coloured fruit is guaranteed to make the mind more alert and aware. The difference is very obvious especially in high-powered brain sessions. Students taking exams have found a 10% increase in mental speed after they’ve followed a daily pomegranate diet for two weeks. It’s not enough if the juice is drunk. Eating a pomegranate daily can substantially increase the power of the human brain.

Revisit High School Math
If you have a regular job, chances are you haven’t touched math in nearly a decade. There is a good reason why most fifth graders are smarter than adults. Math problems are not to be taken lightly at all. In fact, they are a powerful tool for IQ development. They increase mental speed and logical thinking. Start with seventh grade math and work your way up to the twelfth grade. A half hour everyday for two months and you will notice the difference yourself.

Learn Classical Music
Studies have shown that children who regularly practice classical music have memories that are 20% more advanced than their non-musical counterparts. In fact, early Carnatic music students were required to practice their singing, standing neck deep in a pond at 5 am.

If you have learnt music, you’re already ahead of the competition. All you have to do is practice for 30 minutes daily. If you haven’t learnt, it’s never too late to begin. Find a neighbourhood mami who can teach you and sing away. You are guaranteed to get smarter and be a lot less stressed to boot.

Learn a Language
Pick a language you know nothing about, blow the dust off your dictionary and start plugging away. There are some fabulous language-instruction DVDs available in the market. If you’re happier in a classroom, pick a weekend class or better yet, ask your workplace to introduce a language course at work.

Language learning is one of the easiest ways to kick start your brain. And it can give your career a boost. What more you do need?

The Right Diet
Of course, the right diet does imply a balanced diet. But there are some foods that significantly increase brain power. Yogurt and rice mixed together, spinach greens, green tea and of course fish, preferably the oily variety.

People who include fish, dairy and rice in their daily meals are significantly smarter. Red wine is also a brain food.

Here’s a tip. Stay away from ajinomoto. It kills brain cells.

Exercise
This includes both the physical and mental kind. Hitting the gym daily has a lot of benefits. One of them is increased blood circulation to the brain, increasing its capability. However, you could also try daily mental exercises.

Try solving the crossword and the sudoku every morning. Read the papers everyday and follow up on issues. Learn a higher number of mathematic tables every week. Remember, the brain, at the end of everything, is a muscle. Exercise will only make it better.

The idea is to keep your head working. It will be extremely frustrating in the beginning. But keep at it. Try and understand something that is totally unfamiliar to you every once in a while. Follow these simple tips and you will dazzle the world with your alert wit!
