Ten Tips for Indian Diabetics

Ten Tips for Indian Diabeticschillibreeze writerRashmee Madhav

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder, in which the body does not produce sufficient insulin, leading to high blood sugar levels. Uncontrolled diabetes can be life threatening and lead to coma or chronic tissue damage. (Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas that helps regulate carbohydrate metabolism.)

Diabetes can of two types: Type 1 and Type 2. In Type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin. It is typically detected in youth and requires injections of insulin. In Type 2 diabetes, the body's cells fail to respond to insulin. It develops in adulthood and it may be controlled through dietary means. In some cases, insulin may be required.

Diabetes in India

Diabetes is not just a disease of the developed countries, it is also a disease which is present in developing countries. The increased prevalence of diabetes in India has a lot to do with a switch from a traditional to a Western diet. India has a rich heritage and culture. It is well know for its Alternative medicine, which many people depend on for the cure of diabetes.

Here are a few tips on how to control diabetes:

  • Including channa dal in your diet helps reduce blood glucose levels.
  • Methi (fenugreek), when consumed regularly shows considerable signs of reducing blood glucose levels.
  • Guar gum (a medicinal plant), which is used as an ayurvedic medicine, has a proven blood glucose lowering effect due to its high fiber content. It should be taken in small amounts with adequate water.
  • Drinking green tea considerably reduces blood glucose levels. Tea leaves from the traditional tea plant, enhances insulin activity.
  • Drink at least eight glasses of water, which keeps dehydration at bay. Dehydration raises blood sugars. Therefore, it is essential to replace lost fluids.
  • Garlic is considered to have insulin-like properties. Including it in your diet is beneficial.
  • Include Ragi and wheat in your diet, these cereals are known for it’s high fiber content
  • Yoga, an age-old Indian technique has a proven effect on reducing blood glucose levels. Following specific asanas, help regulate blood glucose levels. Refer to www.holisticonline.com for more information on yoga and its benefits.
  • Avoid eating heavy meals as blood glucose levels will shoot up. Space out smaller meals throughout the day.
  • Maintaining desirable body weight by exercising regularly will help reduce blood glucose levels.

Note: Consult a physician for any clarification about medicines and diet.

Conclusion

With a growing number of Indians suffering from diabetes, awareness among people has to be created for proper diagnosis and medication.
