Do I Dream?

Do I Dream?chillibreeze writer Srinivasan

What is color? What are dreams? Do we dream? Is it in techni-color or black and white? Does it have anything to do with our lives?

Human beings are such a confused lot. They are unable to answer these questions about themselves and they then start wondering whether, we, dogs, dream! As far as I am concerned, I cannot make out what are colors. I have what humans call 'Dichromatic Vision'. I cannot differentiate between red, yellow and green colors. But what I have not been able to understand is how does one explain any color to a blind person? According to me, these are just names given to various shades between white and black…. what one can see very clearly to what one cannot see at all. My world is made up of only two colors and hundreds of shades in between. However I am primed to see 'motion' rather than defining the world around only through my vision. I use a blend of my sense of smell and hearing to achieve what the humans do through their eyes alone. Every time the family used to come back with more bags than they went out with, there would be lots of oohs and aahs about the gorgeous colors of things they bought. They enjoy it, that’s fine with me, till such time that they don't ask me to comment about it. I wouldn’t be able to comment anyway. Oh, but I digress!

Back to my dreams! Do I dream? If what happens when I am curled up deep asleep and I feel I am doing things I want to but cannot - is called a dream - then I do dream. What do I dream about? I dream about a lot of things. I dream about being unleashed in a vast meadow of soft grass with no boundaries, where I could just keep running endlessly without getting tired. If there are birds and other dogs to chase, that would be greater fun. I dream of cold days where I could sit in the warmth of a fire next to my family getting my back patted. Totally content the way I am. I do bark a lot in my dreams at strangers or things that frighten me. I am told that I was barking like a puppy in my sleep. The family always exclaims when I get up from deep slumber how my legs were moving in the sleep as if I were running. How right they are, they don't know. I was running and I was enjoying the feeling.

Sometimes I get to hear the dreams my family has. Many a times, it is about something bad - how they got chased, how someone fell down, how they did not have anyone around and so on. And at times, it is about some travel to a new place or meeting someone they had not met for a long time.

Why do people have bad dreams - the so called nightmares? I feel that it is because they do not think positive in the day time when they are awake. Their fears manifest themselves as nightmares. Probably someone would have already researched all this. I am illiterate but I do believe that one needs to see the bright side of life always and unconditionally. If you see the sun, be happy that it is there, providing you the light and heat required to live life. If it is raining, see it as a way life has for cooling down after a long spell of heat, energizing all of us with the nectar of life - water. If the day has gone bad, see if you were responsible for it. If you were - work towards improving yourself. If you were not, then why worry and take it on yourself?

You think I don't have a bad day? I do only when I am not petted or I am locked up alone the whole day. That hardly happens because I make sure that people want me around at all times due to my behavior or the way I am. My take on this: Dream Big!!! Dream Beautiful!!! Dreams are yours and yours alone.
