Right from my childhood days, one phenomenon that keeps on eluding me is the three letter enigma, “GOD”. So much has been built around this concept that it has become almost difficult if not impossible to divorce IT from the day to day chores and even an iota of activity is attributed to its glory. The word GOD has been unanimously defined by all the religions as the One which is Omnipotent, Omnipresent and Omniscient and is supposed to be the One which has created everything right from the blade of grass to the marvelous and stupendous cosmos. Every being is believed to be under its control which punishes the bad and rewards the good souls accordingly. Sounds great!

Scientific world
Now let’s turn aside to a more practical side of our life where we literally live in a digital age and everything is stored in computer chips and measured in gigabytes. The word’ science’ refers to a systematized body of knowledge which necessarily goes through three important steps namely observation, test and inference and no conclusion is formed beyond the scope of the aforesaid dimensions. Whether it is an electric bulb or the discovery of the gravitational force, the three steps had been followed meticulously and the results well documented for researchers and the general public, thus paving the way to further widen the scope of the field. This is what we generally term it as rationality or in other words the ability to question everything and not concede anything without a scientific proof.

Clash of the Titans
The last 200 years have witnessed swift growth in the field of science. The discoveries of atoms and space exploration have shaken the faith of the common man in God but strangely this same science has also paved the way for their increased faith in it too. For example, parents tend to instill the phenomenon of Almighty in the young minds citing the limitations that science faces everyday and asserting the importance of Grace in life in general. Religious fanatics play a very important role here in weakening and besmirching the pure minds into believing something that has not been proved till date. In fact, God has become an industry for the fanatics to prey on the gullible masses that there is a transnational flow of funds to arrange for religious congregations and building the place of worship not to mention the aid to conduct so-called holy wars.

9/11 and 26/11 attacks are classic examples of brutal savages in the name of religion and these same attacks also questions the existence of God because if God exists, then why were these massacres not averted? If these should be comprehended as plays of God as justified by the religious heads and god-men, then such a God should be sadist in taking pleasure in inflicting pain on innocent beings.

Upanishads say “is”ness is Brahma (Vedic term for God). That is, the ‘present’ is God (this should not be confused with atheism or agnosticism). Buddhism says emptiness is final and ‘Truth’ abides in it. Both Christianity and Islam stem from the same source only to differ in the mode of worship. Both the religions unanimously agree that there is a Super Power that takes care of us and is responsible for everything. But even a cursory look into the history of the world would say that the Almighty has been missing in attendance whenever natural calamities or disasters shook this world.

The absenteeism of God
Let’s take the African nation Somalia where death due to hunger has become a routine affair. An NGO report says that an African boy on an average, sleeps for only two hours in a day in war-prone territories and is forced to eat human flesh and drink the blood in order to become hard in mind and fight for a ‘just’ cause. The boy matures into an ‘able’ adult only to reap what he has sown.

The Palestine-Israeli conflict is another case in point where people belonging to both the territories pin their hopes that one day ‘justice’ would be delivered to them and this belief has caused millions to become rebels and sacrifice their lives for sake of their nations. Jihadis continue their ‘holy wars’ all round the world only reiterating the fact that God is continuously absenting Himself in protecting the innocent and is supposedly cooling His heels in some unknown oblivion.

The Tsunami attack in South Asian coastal territories and the recent deluge of floods in Pakistan are placid epitome of nature wreaking havoc on mankind leaving scores of millions of lives stranded to fend for themselves. Who can forget the Hiroshima or Nagasaki massacres or the Holocaust events or even the Bhopal gas tragedy?

The Chaos theory otherwise called the ‘Butterfly effect’ has built mathematical models to show us that any small strain in a remote corner of this world would cause a mammoth catastrophe in some other part in due course of time, with a string of events linking the cause and the effect but ultimately all being independent events by themselves.

So do we really need God in this scientific world? I don’t think so. It is the individual who carries out all the activities from dawn to dusk and it is again the individual who is responsible for their outcomes. Life after death is a matter of belief and certainly not within the domain of science and the rational mind. As it reminds me the adage ‘work is worship’, a man can divorce God from his life and still lead a normal life as the afore mentioned cases clearly indicate that down the ages human beings have struggled to reach this milestone of digital age without the help of the so-called Almighty.
