Why Not Have Minimum Educational Qualifications for Ministers?

Why think? The world will not perish.
Why write? The world will not stop functioning.
Why not have minimum qualifications for ministers? That will not make any difference to our lives.
It will. It surely will.

Do not have minimum educational qualifications for ministers – rather, have them educated. There is a difference and that lies in the fact that degrees can be acquired but education is that what touches the mind and the soul. The governance of any kind can be successful only when the governing mind is at least as rational, if not more, as the mind of those being governed.

My thought process starts with the fact that I am thinking and writing on a subject that affects not only me but also my family, the society that I am a part of, the country for which our worthy soldiers die! How will the lawmakers make education compulsory for the children without knowing the essence of education?

The other day I saw this ad on television - a minister goes to a grown up boy and says that he wants the boy to vote for him. The boy asks the minister what his qualifications are. The minister looks at the boy surprised and then the boy asks him about his work experience, the minister looks dazzled and asks the boy why should he be educated. To this the boy replies that he should be educated since he has applied for a job. “What job?”, asks the minister. The boy replies, “Desh ko chalane ka job” (the job of running the country).

Let us understand the requirement in a broad perspective. The need is to not only have a minimum qualification as a gating factor, but also to have ministers educated. There is certainly a difference. This could be the starting point.

We all know that education makes an individual. It may come from family, school, society: from anywhere but it must, as it forms the basis for rational thinking.

Education is that which puts the brain to use. The brain is the most powerful organ in our body. We all do what our mind tells us to do and if the mind is diseased it will convey that.

Ministers must be the role models. Minimum educational qualification for ministers should be at a level where they have had enough exposure to do justice to the important portfolios they handle. The aura of people like Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is not under debate.

The need of the hour is to have dynamism in politics as it functions the way heart functions in the body- it purifies and distributes. With the kind of potential that India’s youth has, and the opportunities that are coming up, it will not be difficult to take the country to new heights. The economy may be booming but a new horizon can be reached only when education and rationality prevails.

With education comes knowledge and knowledge can be perceived. The ideal way of appointing ministers is to screen them and media is a wonderful tool to do this. As education can only be judged through interaction, aspiring leaders should be selected at the hands of the majority. I think the ‘Lead India’ campaign, started by the Times of India, will bring about a change in our country’s leadership.
