Free Market Economy: A Harsh Mistress for Freelancers
Resources for your freelance writing career Freelancing/working from home is a dream for many. The reasons for opting out of the rat race vary - you may want to discover your entrepreneurial passion, or may simply hate reporting to a boss or being part of an industry. Working in your pyjamas sure sounds great, but how much do you value each of these perks when comparing them to a “stable waged” job? How much are you willing to endure for a freelancer's lifestyle? Want to plunge into the freelancing world? Think again. For starters, freelancers are paid peanuts! It is a common trend, for first world companies to outsource their work to third world countries and pay peanuts for it. In order to be taken seriously, it is important for freelancers to have a registered company. Else their work is considered inexperienced or mediocre. The Global economy is sadly a harsh mistress for freelancers. For most newbies, the starting point to get some work and make your presence felt is the freelancer bidding sites. But what you notice when you are on these sites is mind boggling. Most of the gigs on these sites are hardly rewarding-especially if you are new to the industry, and yet to make a mark in the freelance world. You’ll notice a lot of clients auctioning a dozen articles for a dollar each! Offers on “bid for work” sites are laughable, and downright unfair. There are takers for such low paying projects too-sadly, most of them Indians who don’t have a sense of market demand. There’s a thin line between getting a project and losing it due to “pricing”. Demand a high amount and the client bails out, ask for less and they don’t think your work is professional enough to meet industry standards. It is always a downer when you bag a job only to realize you are actually charging way less than you should be for what you are doing. Throughout your freelancing career you’ll never get out of the “too high or too little” state of affairs. Isn’t a free global economy supposed to open avenues for all? One dollar is not an agreeable wage even for an average English-educated-ravaged-by-poverty Indian. If no one accommodates a 1$ price they will have to raise their rates, right? It’s time third world freelancers demand an online market that sticks with the professional standards they deserve. This will benefit both clients, who will receive quality work for their assignments, and freelancers, who will earn a respectable living using their skill set.
