Gaming and a Peek at its Future
It isn’t an uncommon sight to actually see your little one absorbed in a handheld console or sitting with his eyes glued to the TV from a couch about less than a meter away, clutching a joystick of the new PS2 you bought for his birthday last week like he’s holding on to it for dear life. You mutter “kids!!” under your breath and go about with your business. You might think that you take good care of your son and he doesn’t have a care in his life. But do you have any idea that he’s actually fighting for his life against some huge monster in that little piece of modern machinery? Well. if you didn’t, then welcome to the gaming world. Gaming lures children and adolescents alike and many people also try to pursue it as a career. Though not many Indians succeed, the ones who do are actually blessed with the real feeling of ‘fun at work’. It all started when children who used to listen to stories from their grandparents about a knight rescuing a princess from a dragon after crossing hills, mountains, valleys, and oceans and grew up not forgetting these stories and wanted a more visual representation of whatever they were told. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words. They wondered, “what if we make this motion picture an interactive session between people in the normal, essentially boring world with this fantastic colorful new realm of excitement?” The Result - the world’s first, most popular, colorful, addictive game of all time - Mario, created by Shigeru Miyamoto in 1981. Mario had made its mark on every single gaming console with a lot of upgrades till date and is still a favorite worldwide. Before anyone could understand or comprehend what these ‘video games’ exactly were, Sony, then a consumer electronics producer, saw the potential of gaming if nurtured the right way and in 1994, rolled out the Sony Playstation. One of the world’s first 32 bit video games that promised better graphics and a more user friendly playable interface. Needless to say, it became an instant hit among children who were tired and watery-eyed due to constantly peering at Mario’s graphics. By 1998, Sony held the lion’s share of the gaming market next to Sega (Dreamcast). While Sega stopped manufacture of DC and started concentrating more on software, the complete gaming market went over to Sony. Sony soon created another fan following by releasing the PlayStation 2 on May 11, 2000. This was one of the first consoles that facilitated global gaming through connecting to the internet. Statistics state that over 150 million consoles were sold by January 31, 2011. Though PS2 created a cult following out of almost every child exposed to technology and ruled the roost as the top priority of every little boy’s wishlist for Christmas, one huge disadvantage of these consoles was that they required a TV set and a power supply to plug both of them on. This restricted gaming to the house couch after dad’s news bulletins and mom’s series of soaps for the day. This left every kid praying to god to get something that transcends these barriers. This was answered by PlayStation Portable (PSP). Sony’s first handheld gaming console made its debut in 2003 and is still the prized possession of over millions around the world. Nintendo Wii is a console that concentrates more on gesture gaming and has various different joystick models (Including the Guitar shaped one for the Blockbuster ‘Guitar Hero’) Presently the gaming market is shared by Sony under the PlayStation banner, Microsoft under the Xbox banner, And Nintendo in the Wii banner. But Sony still rules the roost, with over 50% of the market in its palm Future prospects of Sony include Sony PSP2. A touchscreen interfaced, Bluetooth and Wi-fi enabled handheld gadget with a powerful functionality, Xbox 360 hasn’t had any drastic developments so far and Nintendo WII has been developing various controllers for its many games to be played with. But we forgot about the computer - the basic mastermind behind the creation of these pieces of media and entertainment. Today adding a Graphics card, Changing the motherboard, and spicing up the RAM slots of any properly compatible computer can turn it from an integrated office tool to a massively powered up digital playmate for anyone who’s ready to spend the bucks. Though a perfect gaming computer could cost you much more than buying a PS3 (about 50k for medium compatibility and 80k for complete compatibility), it still pays to actually get one assembled by your own hands rather than shelling by the thousands every time you want to buy a new game for your console. These consoles that have been talked about on the above paragraphs also suffered a lot of security breaches due to black collar hackers who were able to run pirated CD’s and Blu Ray Discs on a PS2 and a PS3 respectively. Upon modification and Also Store games in an .iso file format on the memory stick in place of the UMDs in a PSP. Sony found its data a temporary sanctuary by upgrading its firmware. Now the battle rages on, with the hackers breaking each and every stronger code and Sony correspondingly upgrading its firmware periodically. Bottom line: Gaming has seen exponential growth these last pair of decades and will continue to be a great force in the years to come. So start saving the bucks now or repent for it with your child’s tantrums.
