Harry Potter - The End of An Era
As we draw closer to the grand finale of the famous Harry Potter series one is left to wonder what lies beyond the hour. However, as the series sinks into the annals of literary history, probably dividing its timeline as before and after the Harry Potter age and as the series Potter loses it’s magic for the next generation, will someone in the future care to dust off the volumes from the higher shelves of local libraries? The success of the series is unique. The reason, I believe, is that children and adults alike could transform themselves to an eleven year old and grow up with Harry once again. Interestingly, there was also a sizable portion of Harry’s fans with whom I interacted that never identified themselves with Harry. They just wanted to be part of the history in the making, to be there at Hogwarts right alongside with Harry and his friends as they moved from one adventure to the next. This is quite a distinction as children usually identify themselves with the likes of Superman or other superheroes. Probably this can be largely attributed to the fact that Harry was never alone in any of his adventures. He was never a superhero and always had friends and well wishers more powerful and knowledgeable who played a major role directly or indirectly in his success. Brilliantly, Harry never fails to acknowledge even the smallest help that he ever got. That in itself is a great lesson to draw from, given the blood thirsty and competitive world we live in. Rowling has drawn heavily from all sorts of fairy tales, common magical creatures, actual historic personalities, events and even from books of the same genre predating the fateful day of 31st Oct 1981. However, apart from that her work is entirely unique. In fact she was able to successfully integrate these beliefs and characters of age old stories and a magical world to that with our time in all its present day glory. Aspects like the preservation of pure blood line, freedom of the oppressed are quite common in our own political and individual lives. Any adult reader, anywhere in the world could readily draw a parallel of this in his own life and get a magical insight into present day reality. Rowling, in her imagination had the liberty and could have made magic beyond any physical or meta-physical law. Yet, she chose to put magic well within a lawful frame work and even powers, mysteries and events beyond the understanding of any one wizard or witch. This rendered more credibility to the world of Potter than it would otherwise have. For children and their parents it helps to draw up many lessons in distinguishing the good from the evil, the right from the wrong and realizing that even the seemingly limitless have limits. Read between the lines, the Harry Potter series comes with a clear and subtle message that holds great importance in our world and theirs. Probably, the timing was apt as we drown deeper and deeper into present day mechanical chaos, and as happiness in its real sense continues fading from our lives. It is the importance of human emotions and their uncanny powers that is highlighted many a time. Lupin clearly states to Harry that the spells draw heavily on human emotions. It’s the power of the happy thoughts that overcome Dementors (epitome of deepest darkness) and Bogarts (one’s deepest fears). As a child I would readily create and collect many happy moments with my friends and family and store them to create an effective Patronum, any time I need one in the future. By now, both Harry and his creator Rowling have been criticized and applauded alike by almost anyone worth the title of being a critic of any sort. My attempt is neither to reinvent what others have done nor to ponder deep into its hidden meanings intended or otherwise. Personally I feel a deep loss; an emptiness of sorts, probably akin to that which Harry felt soon after he destroyed Riddle and this is just a humble attempt at filling that void. It is also in a way my attempt to thank Rowling and her magical friends for a wonderful journey that I was a part of as I grew up. And it helped preserve the child in me till date. I can only hope that the age of adventure does not end here. Good luck Harry; may your adventures be preserved in the pages of the series until someone dusts them up far into the future to begin anew.
